Fryberg

The short and varied tour to Niederental near Schwanden is a perfect after-work tour with various options.

Description

The route is basically the same as the official Fryberg tour (Route 306), but has been spruced up a little in terms of downhill fun. It is therefore available as a variant for beginners (official route) and in a version for enduro riders. The ascent to Auerenalp is shared. The route starts in Schwanden, from where you take a country road to Haslen. This is where the 800-metre ascent begins via Tannenberg and Auen to Auerenalp at 1420 meters above sea level. This is the starting point for the descent. Follow the alpine road to Geisserblätz until a marked trail branches off to the right. This single trail rides to the valley station of the Mettmenbahn and is very challenging. You are back on the official route for a few meters, but then follow the Niderenbach. After a reservoir, you climb another 80 meters up the mountain. The reason for this is the single trail from Gandberg to Schwanden, a treat for good riders. It winds its way down into the valley over countless bends and rejoins the official route just above Schwanden.

- The first section of the trail from the Kies valley station to the reservoir is quite overgrown and barely visible (but you can do a section to the left of the Niderenbach stream on the road)
- Singletrail from Gandberg to Schwanden: Entry heavy (not rideable for me), rest is technically difficult, partly overgrown - tends to get easier the further down you go

A pearl for friends of rear wheel offsets :-)

Super regular uphill. Perfect for the start of the new season. Lots of e-bikers (but not on the trails).

We changed the first part quite a bit yesterday to avoid road closures, but above all to increase the singletrail section. That worked like a charm. Exact track under:

Sometimes flowy, sometimes overgrown, a couple of rear wheel offsets. A good thing.

I found the second part the coolest. Ok, the first 40m are partly unrideable. But then it got technically exciting on a barely used Geissepeterweg. And all the way down into the valley. But it's really only fun if you can get the rear wheel cleanly around the corner.

Great tour. The 1000m ascent is well rewarded. On the second part, the solitude factor is high and that's really nice...

- The trail from Chis in the direction of Niederenbach has been closed due to rockfall (Forst Schwanden 26.06.2017 until end unknown, information at Forst Schwanden).

- The second part after the Gandberg-Schwanden entrance is a no longer maintained hiking trail, in addition to falling rocks, fallen trees, moss-covered stones, grass, leaves and other things that cover the view, the upper part is no longer passable even with very good riding technique in many sections (not possible to move, dismount every few meters and push downhill...). The lower part then becomes more fluid and is rideable with good transfer technique and balance, but is only fun for good riders.

Conclusion: All in all, the tour is not worthwhile, i.e. many meters uphill and the trail fun factor is marginal. Tour not recommended in this condition!

The Chis trail in the direction of Niederenbach is still closed (05.07.20).
I didn't ride the second part at all. There was no path at all!
I agree with your conclusion! I didn't like the tour.

The trail from Gandberg to Schwanden is a treat for "very" good riders...

My rating: riding technique: *****
