Blinnenhorn

Blinnenhorn

The Blinnenhorn is one of the magical peaks of the Goms - and can even be reached by mountain bike from the Italian side. The view from the summit is stunning, but you have to earn it with a feat of strength of the harder kind.

Description

The start in the direction of Blinnenhorn is downright leisurely. From the Griessee junction below the Nufenen Pass, you take a small road up to the wind turbines at Griessee and then a wonderfully flowing path over to the Gries Pass and down to the valley floor of the Valle del Gries. Now it's time to get down to business: the bike is on your shoulders as far as the Rifugio Città di Busto, followed by a short section of riding until you have to carry the bike again below the Lago del Sabbione. The hard part of the climb, however, is the section from Rifugio Claudio e Bruno up to the summit: steep and slippery. But the ascent to the summit is worth it for two reasons. Firstly, the panoramic view from the summit. This is one of the best that the Upper Valais has to offer. From Mont Blanc to Weisshorn and Dom to the entire Bernese Alps, one beauty follows the next.

Secondly: the descent. Although this is very difficult, it is a treat for very good bikers. The further you descend, the smoother the trail becomes. Below the dam wall of Lago Sabbione, you have to push a little again to finally get back to the Rifugio Città di Busto. Instead of riding down to the valley floor on the ascent route, you now climb up to the Bättelmatt Pass - the starting point of the super trail down to the Gries Pass. Back at the wind turbines, head down the trail into the Ägenetal valley and follow the marked route down to Ulrichen. Conclusion: The tour is a highlight for very well-trained mountain bikers with above-average riding technique.

Notes

  • Take the tour in good weather and with good visibility due to the exceptional summit panorama.
  • For the ascent to the starting point, take the Postauto-Tour from Ulrichen to the Nufenen Pass and ride down the pass road to the Griessee turn-off
  • The Blinnenhorn is very popular with (Italian) hikers. Numerous pedestrians are to be expected, especially between Lago del Sabbione and the summit.
  • There is a risk of falling rocks on the road between the Griessee turn-off and the wind turbines. Passage is at your own risk. This section of the tour should be avoided, especially in wet weather.

I was on the Blinnenhorn two weeks ago and advise against the usual route.
The road between the Nufenen Pass and the Griessee is closed. There are a lot of surprisingly large boulders on the road. A car can no longer get through. During the 5 minutes in which I drove through anyway (shame on me), there were several rumbles and small stones rolled down. I was lucky...
The two hiking trails between the Piano dei Camosci plateau and Lago del Sabbione are also closed. A fairly large rockfall has come down there. The rock has neither been secured nor the path repaired. An alternative route is via Rifugio 2A. Exciting ridge up, beautiful trail down. On the return, the path is not so fun.
From the Rifugio Città di Busto up to the Bättelmattpass, the path has been washed away a few times. There are now chains fitted, some of which are loose. But it's going great.

Did the tour on 05.10.2023 . Attention on the section before the reservoir
Lago del Sabbione a rockfall is very dangerous! from the summit we rode over the glacier directly towards Griessee. very impressive and very challenging.

We did the tour on 30.07.22. We tackled the section on the closed road at our own risk, it's short and was doable for us. We turned back about 300m before the summit due to the time running out. The final ascent to the Bättelmattpass should not be underestimated. Complete push/carry passage, partly secured with chains, but easily doable. All in all, a great but very demanding tour.

At the moment the little road that goes from the pass road to the reservoir is closed due to a rockfall (wanted to cross the Griespass on 24.8. 2020), didn't work!

Hello Peter,
Can you tell me if you still tried to go this way or if you gave up at the sign with the rockfall?
Thanks a lot!
Steve

The sign is there, but many passers-by ignore it. Also by many mountain bikers because there is no other way to get to the Griessee. Neither do the employees of the power stations, by the way, but then there is no rockfall. However, it is possible to ride through, but at your own risk. Which is actually the case in the Alps anyway.
