Engelberg-Meiringen

The descent from the Joch Pass through the Gental valley to Meiringen is a world-class mountain bike route. There are virtually no ascents thanks to the mountain railroads.

Description

A good starting point for the tour through the Gental is Lucerne railroad station. First take the train to Engelberg, then change to the gondola to Trüebsee and finally take the chairlift to Jochpass. A first-class trail now rides downhill to Engstlenalp. Here you follow the route to Melchsee-Frutt for a while, but then don't climb but head downhill on the trail high above the valley floor through the Gental valley. The single trail descends gently until it turns into an alpine road after the Unterbalm-Alp. This is followed by an unspectacular section until another highlight after Grüobi. High and steep via Innertkirchen you reach Meiringen. You can now ride back to Lucerne by train.

Bonjour à toutes et tous.
I have organized a great tour from the Jochpass to Meiringen on 8.7.2023, which seems to me to be a nice alternative to this tour, which is also feasible without electric support: with Hm+1'100 and Hm-2'700 on 35km.

This is one of the really beautiful panoramic tours: here is the track on SwitzerlandMobility :

On the bikes at the Jochpass around 10:00, we arrived in Tannapl around 11:00, then arrival around 12:00 at Barmeregghoren, some pushing downhill and uphill max. 30 min.

Then pure joy: panoramic singletrack at approx. 2,100 m to Planplatten, arriving at approx. 13:00. We met a maximum of 20 hikers on this part of the Via Alpina on this Saturday morning, so it was quite manageable.
The technical descent leads to Hääggen, then to Käserstatt at 13:40.
The ascent to Gibel is rideable almost all the way to the summit. It's worth pushing your bike to the summit, because the 360-degree view on the Gibel is fantastic.

After the break and the photos, my trail leads to Meiringen station, 1,400 m down and lots of fun: it takes about an hour, with some technical passages, but 95% rideable.

Arrival at 1600 allows to have a drink before taking the train at xx.21 to Interlaken Ost.

We are a team of 6 friends - experienced women and men, with light e-MTB : Orbea Rise, Spez Levo and Rotwild E375.

Conditions were dry today, which is certainly an advantage on the rocky sections. The trail lives from the ambience and the alpine character and not from the flow. There are great trail sections and then regular sections with boulder terrain to push through. Solid biking technique and fitness are essential. I definitely enjoyed it.

I'm currently sitting very frustrated on the train from Meiringen back to Lucerne. The trail described as world-class has absolutely nothing to do with a trail. As already mentioned by other riders, there are an enormous number of pushing passages on the hiking trail. And many Elevation losses are made on roads, which makes no fun or sense at all. Please remove this route from the homepage, it just sucks!

The hiking trail through the Gental is not suitable for bikes. There is a pushing passage every 30m. You never get into a flow. Some good trail passages at the end in the forest towards Meiringen.

There were really a lot of places that were far too difficult for me as an occasional biker to ride, despite having the basic technique.

Often blocked and uphill, for me the fun was too short. But I'm generally not a fan of high trails
