Maschgenkamm

The technically easy tour to the Maschgenkamm on the Flumserberge is great fun even for less experienced mountain bikers.

Description

Ideally, the tour starts at the Tannenbodenalp, which is easily accessible by post bus from Flums or by cable car from Unterterzen. However, it is also possible to tackle the ascent under your own steam. After the mountain station, the official mountain bike route (number 470) rides past the idyllic Grosssee lake to the Maschgenkamm, the mountain station of the Flums mountain railroads. If you wish, you can continue along the official route to Panüöl and then turn right onto route 478 to Alp Fursch. The much more attractive version is to take the high-level trail from Maschgenkamm to Zigerfurgglen and then descend on the trail to Alp Fursch. Here begins the long descent over the Ruhegg and along the Schilsbach to Bildbrugg. You change sides of the valley and reach Portels. An excellent single trail now forms the basis for the final section through the Maltinawald forest to Flums.

Note: The route rides almost exclusively on official and signposted routes

Dangerous on 20.10.2024: Here is an optimized version:

I started at Flums station and rode the bus to the terminus. From there, the trail is well signposted and no GPS is needed. The ascent to the Maschgenkamm runs nicely on a gravel path and offers a wonderful autumn atmosphere. The descent, on the other hand, is typical of a Gieger tour (no offense intended)! Steep downhill and asphalt passages again and again. The tour is not very demanding, apart from a few steep sections, which are rather exhausting for inexperienced riders. Experienced riders can accelerate well there.

I think an interesting alternative would be the tour around the Spitzmeilen. The SAC hut there offers delicious food, and the subsequent, rather unspectacular return to Flums would be more bearable in this variant. As it is, however, I wouldn't ride the tour a second time.
