Monte Arbostora Extended
Description
The starting point of the tour is Lugano railroad station, from where you ride up to Massagno on the main road and reach the edge of the forest near Breganzona. This section with traffic is only short, now the actual mountain bike route begins. On a fast and wide path with occasional climbs, you roll through the steep forest west of Breganzona and reach the village of Muzzano. Now you climb up on roads to Gentilino and ride downhill for a while to reach the legendary Arbostora Trail near Paradiso a little further up. Here you are now on the classic Arbostora route and start in Pazallo on the super trail, which, with a short interruption at Carabbia, leads quickly, flowy and fun to the village of Arbostora on Lago di Lugano. You roll along the lakeside road to Morcote and a little later, also on a road, up to Vico Morcote and the village of Baslona. This is where the next fun begins with the singletrail route down to Grancia, up to the village of Carona on wide and fast paths, then on first-class trails created by locals. In this way, you reach Grancia and climb up again just opposite to the village of Agra, where the next trail descent is on the program. The route descends to Montagnola and, after crossing the village, continues with the final section down to Lago di Muzzano. Finally, you roll along cycle paths back to Lugano train station.

We did the tour on February 15, 2026, and everything was perfectly rideable. There were still some leaves on the trails, but nothing that really got in the way. All in all, a really beautiful tour! Especially with the light e-bike, it was an absolute pleasure to ride. There were some very steep counter-climbs in between.
At the end of the tour, my Garmin Fenix 8 showed ~49 km and ~1600 m of elevation gain. The additional 300 m of elevation gain then depleted the planned reserves of the e-bike battery...
On the descent northwards, it is worth taking the following detours: Cima Pescia 835 and from Badi 624 up to point 694 (right by the electricity pylon). Both descents have beautiful trails maintained by the locals. Some of the leaves were even removed with a blower (?). Postbus up to Carona takes bikes. However, this is only possible when there are few people and no baby carriages. You can also start the trail to Morcote from Carona.
03.04.2025 - everything is perfectly rideable. I like the tour because it can be easily combined or shortened at the start of the season. I skipped the last hill to Agra / Monte Croce, for example, as there was no time. Highlights are the descent to Morcote, as well as the DH trails built by locals from about km 33.
And enjoying an ice cream by the lake in Lugano at the end is always THE highlight anyway 😂
Rode the tour yesterday, we skipped the first loop.
The overgrown trails mentioned by the previous riders have now been cleared, everything was passable without any problems. Only the small bridge is still missing, but that's not a problem.
All in all, a flowing tour, the difficulty is right for the classification.
I rode this exact tour on 30.10.2024. Basically, it's a great tour to explore the area around Lugano.
You can skip the first loop in the far north. From km 3 onwards, the path is closed or passage is prohibited. Even if my special biker goggles filter out such prohibition signs, it's still not worth it. The trail is okay, but is interrupted by three steep sections. Without an e-bike or "Schurter" in your surname, you have to push here.
As mentioned by previous riders, it is also forbidden to cross Baslone at km 27.5. But even this prohibition was successfully ignored by my glasses. There are 30 houses here - I guess where there's no plaintiff, there's no judge.
At 33.5 km, it really is off through the thorns. Again, I would look for something else next time. The trail doesn't really seem to be used anymore.
The last hill, "Monte-Croce," is, in my opinion, for the ass. The ascent runs along the road. Here I would possibly switch to the official mountain bike trail from SwitzerlandMobility.
The highlight of the tour is definitely the 5 km long single trail down to Morcote. Take a look here: https://youtu.be/nwTQdaTX5B8
I rode the tour from Bissone in a slightly different composition. As p.mannhard_50387 has already described, the trail entrance at Carabbia leads through private property. The trail that follows is unfortunately completely overgrown with thorn bushes and was therefore no fun. Overall, a great tour that I would ride again in a shortened version. My highlights are the trail from Carona to Carabbia and the Torell trail to Morcote.
The trail is easy to ride on an eMTB and can be completed in 3 hours with photo breaks. There is a "privato" sign at Carabbia and the path is not easy to find. But you have to go under the chain and along the edge of the forest to get to the path. A good 1km later there is no bridge, but the stream is very small and the embankment is easy to negotiate. All in all, a great tour between the holidays.
Rode with EMTB on 26.3.2023, all dry and a perfect season opener.
Parked free of charge and started at the school complex in Muzzano, so we only entered the route there. Lots of asphalt up to Pazallo, but once you've got that behind you, you're in for a treat! From there, sensational riding and flow fun all the way to Morcote, where a cappuccino is a must ☕️.
At Monte Arbostora, the flow is no longer the same, mainly because the trail below Carona at Ul Sass 459m and at the Ronco Ramelli chalet is closed and no longer maintained. So it's worth taking a look at the Trailforks trail map to find a possibly better solution. I ignored the prohibitions, but there is no more flow there. From Agra onwards, it was easy riding fun again - just right for "coasting". Via Sorengo back to Muzzano, the battery was soon on reserve... 😉.
I have tried to combine the best trails with the detour to Morcote. Attention: Track is traced on the Map, therefore not always accurate to the meter - keep your eyes open :-) In addition, the altitude meters still have to be verified - Swiss Topo (1755m) differs greatly from Komoot (1420m), so I tend more towards Swiss Topo. At 33.6 km the trail has unfortunately been deliberately closed and obstructed...
The roadblock mentioned below is still in place. The detour is quite tedious, but doable. Over stairs at the end.
The closure at km 3.4 is probably here to stay. I rode the route on May 20, 2021, and the closure no longer seems to be lifted. Fortunately, there is another way to cycle the section of the route.
Beautiful loop with easier downhill trails and generally lots of flow. Most of the time you ride on approx. 1m wide hiking trails. Unfortunately, you also ride some Elevation losses on asphalt. Nevertheless, a nice tour and you also get to know the surroundings of Lugano.
Trail still closed at KM 3.4, ridden on 02.05.21. There is now also a guardrail on the trail.
Super cool tour. Flow has a name. Great for this time of year! Can only recommend the tour!

Happy Trails and thx to Ride
See ya on the Trails
I saw some bikers with obvious difficulties on the 434 downhill. It's short, but some had to push the bike. Riding technique 3 not 2.
Ridden on 13.03.2021. Trail closed at km 3.4 due to landslide/fallen trees. Detour approx. 500m +50Hm mostly also trail. Unfortunately over stairs at the end.
Closure will probably only last a few weeks, as no major damage
