Monte Boglia | Ride MTB

Monte Boglia

Monte Boglia is the inconspicuous local mountain of Lugano. If you want to ride your bike up, you have to carry it to the summit. You will be rewarded with a stunning view and a crisp singletrail descent on the Italian side.

Description

From Lugano, you ride up to Brè on the little road, but you could also take the funicular and save yourself 650 meters in altitude. The steep section of the ascent begins in Brè. First you follow a small road, then a forest path uphill. This is initially very steep, but later becomes somewhat more moderate. Eventually you reach a fountain where the routes separate. If you don't want to go all the way to the summit, ride from here on the trail to Alpe Bolla. For the variant over the summit, turn right at the fountain and climb to the summit via Sasso Rosso. The bike often has to be carried or pushed here. The view from the summit is all the more impressive for it. The descent leads over the mountain ridge to the north, is technically very difficult and contains countless serpentine bends. Finally, you reach the Pian di Scagn saddle, where you ride downhill on Italian soil via Alpe Bolgia to just before Castello. A small road takes you to Puria. A singletrail finally leads via Loggio to San Mamette on the shores of Lago di Lugano. You return to Lugano along the lakeside road.

From Alpe Boglia, the trail is virtually non-existent.

In the second part after the Alpe, where the track crosses the road, you now have to cross a small gorge after 180m..... It didn't look easy, so we decided to turn back. Until then, the trail was rather wild and not very busy.

We shortened the road back along the lake by boat, but it only stops on the CH side

Aaahhhhhh forest road until about 560hm then you come back on a trail, was still a cool round

Hello.
Why are you showing a video of the "Carbon Trail" here ....???
The Carbon Trail is close to Monte Tamaro and not Monte Boglia.

Better not to show a video than to show a video that does not show the trail described above.

Ascent upper half a bit gnarly, but ok to push, descent Spitzkehrenträumli, not exposed, so great if you have fun practicing. Trails up to Alpe Boglia good, then rather wild and boring in the lower section, from the Italian village the trail is no longer there. Better not look for it - it's no use, there really is no more trail ;)

Nice tour, doable even at 30 degrees, as a lot of it is in the forest. It's a bit of a knot on the way up, but with a bit of pushing you've made it once. Wonderful technical descent, partly in the lower S3 area.
After about the first third, it's pure pampas - and this continues for the most part all the way down. Just trust Doctor Garmin :-).
The way back on the main road to Lugano is quite a killer, especially in the summer heat.

As of August 2021: The descent is barely rideable.

Due to the heat, I skipped Monte Boglia and followed the Schweizmobil route to Alpe Bolla instead. A recommendable, flowy trail!

The descent (or rather: the descent?) from Alpe Bolla is barely rideable. The torrents have brought a lot of material that has to be climbed over again and again. The aforementioned ladder no longer exists either, so the 2 m including the bike have to be climbed down. Fortunately, I had a cord with me to lower my bike. As a "reward", you end up on a narrow, busy road with unpleasant tunnels.

Conclusion: If you want to visit the wild Valle Fontana, it's better to leave your bike at home and set off on foot.

I rode the tour yesterday. Due to the consistently positive feedback, I had certain expectations. The ascent was okay and the panorama simply brilliant. However, the descent was a huge disappointment. It was still cool at the beginning, first riding down a bit along the ridge and then a few hairpin bends. After that, the trail got worse and worse, not really flowy and not technical either. You had to search for the path in places as it was completely overgrown with bushes. After the ladder, where you have to carry your bike down, you mostly rode down on gravel. Conclusion: cool ascent, excellent view, disappointing trail

We rode the tour on 17.06.2020.
The uphill is tough but rideable for strong riders except for the hairpin bends (only the curves in between are possible) and the last few meters to the summit. The hairpin bends down from the summit are all rideable, some of which can be negotiated. From Alpe Bolla, the trail is quite "rustic" but very interesting and fun to ride. Apart from the aforementioned small "rock face" and a few crossings of scree that has been washed down, everything is rideable.
Conclusion: With a bit of power in the Uphil and good riding technique, this is a great tour. The view is amazing!

I rode the tour on May 10, 2019.

The first climb on the road is very easy to ride. At the last hairpin bend, we followed a bike signpost instead of the track, which took us under the train. This gave us additional uphill trail meters to Bré. From the forest onwards, I was expecting a longer push and carry session. To my surprise, however, the climb was completely rideable apart from the last 50 m (and apart from most of the hairpin bends), even though my pulse was permanently in the dark red range. The view at the summit was sensational and made up for all the exertion. The descent to Alpe Bolla was difficult and quite washed out, but practically rideable throughout. After that, it was too difficult for me... lots of loose stones, lots of leaves and generally quite rough. However, my companions (equipped with more suspension travel and riding skills) had a lot of fun. We had chosen the trail above Oria for the way back, as the road was closed due to an accident. But this was not a good idea, we were pushing most of the time...
Conclusion: This was definitely not my last time on Monte Boglia. However, from Alpe Bolla I will look for a descent into Val Colla or simply take the beautiful singletrail back to Bré.
I ride a Scott Spark 900RC and am usually in the head group on the uphill; downhill, I'm always the last one by a long way.

The tour can be shortened by taking the train up Monte Bre in Lugan. There are still 800 meters of elevation gain, but the tour is shortened to 2.5 - 3 hours. This means you can also ride in an afternoon or even an evening. Please note: bikes are not transported on the first part of the route (Lugano Cassarata to Suvigliana)! So you have to pedal up the 2 km/100 meters in altitude. The cable car from Suvigliana to the summit rides every half hour (05/35) and takes 10 minutes. From the summit station, ride 1 km down to Bre and turn onto the trail there.
The tour is great fun, technically tricky in places but all rideable. The GPS data on the Italian side is not always accurate to the meter, but the trail is still easy to find. I rode the tour at the end of April 2019 and in the meantime a wooden ladder has been installed in the hollow described by Monika, which makes the climbing much easier. The way back on the asphalt road is a long one, it takes a good half hour to get back to Lugano.

A super beautiful tour if you're not alone. We skipped the initial summit and rode around the outside of the relatively newly prepared, now easy path. From Alpe Bola, the trail is newly marked, but has hardly been ridden in the last six months. There is a lot of dead wood and loose stones on the trail. Later, there is also so much foliage that it reaches up to one meter. Nevertheless, almost everything is rideable, except for the following section:
After Alpe Bola, the trail stretches along the shoulder of the valley, almost at the end of this created path there seems to have been a bridge over a hollow (dry) in the past. You have to climb down a slimmed-down rock face of a good 2m. Not difficult, but you should have a cord with you for the bike (inner tube if necessary) or be in pairs.
