Plan Monnay

Wald-Trail

If you want to ride over the Grand Saint Bernard into the Aosta Valley, you'll ride past Orsières. However, there is a great singletrail tour hidden here at Plan Monnay. Those who like fast, steep and narrow forest trails will get their money's worth here.

Description

From Orsières, you can either ride to Liddes by post bus or take the forest road to the village of Dranse just below Liddes. You later reach the valley station of the chairlift on a mountain road and continue climbing unabated to the ridge. On the last few meters to the summit of Plan Monnay, the path is not always clearly visible. At the top, you can enjoy the view - the Grand Combin on the left and the northern peaks of the Mont Blanc massif on the right. For the descent, follow the trail further along the ridge - a fast and flowing pleasure. The trail becomes increasingly steeper and narrower. In places, it is just as wide as a towel through the steep forest. At a trail junction, you can either ride straight on and flow all the way to Orsières, or turn left and take the more challenging variant past the water pipeline to Som la Proz in the immediate vicinity of Orsières.

Beautiful tour. But from the water pipes (Chateau d'eau) onwards, the marked trail (or GPS track) is not advisable. It must be a "disused" hiking trail. Partly completely overgrown, sloping and at one point it passes right next to an abyss/landslide. The alternative described in the tour description would probably be preferable here.

Very beautiful ascent, the summit of the Vicheres slopes offers a magnificent natural landscape. The first part of the descent is interesting. The second part, however, consists of long, uninteresting crossings in a very damp and shady environment. Only recommended in high summer. The last part leads back to the top of the penstock. From there, the path is partly non-existent and not passable. In my opinion, not a recommendable tour. I do not recommend it. There are many much more interesting tours in the region.
