Tritt-Durannapass

Grüensee (Durannapass)

The Durannapass is one of the great classics among Graubünden's mountain bike tours, but the original route is a little outdated. The version via the Tritt is the modern version of the Durannapass tour with a very high proportion of singletrails. "Unnecessary" climbs are mastered with the mountain railroad or the RhB.

Description

The trail starts on the Weissfluhjoch, the mountain station of the Parsenn funicular. Descend through the large slate scree fields to the famous rock path, the transition to the Strela Pass. The original route would now ride down to Sapün, but on this version of the Duranna tour you stay on the Davos side and follow the trail towards Chörbschhorn. Leave this trail at Latschüelfurgga and head down to Tritt. This rock passage is not called that by chance! You now descend on foot via a steep wooden staircase and have to carry your bike in your right hand on this section, holding on to the safety rope with your left. However, the stairs are easy to climb and the section is generally unproblematic. Unless you have a (heavy) e-bike. The step is the reason why this tour is not recommended for e-mountain bikes. The stairs eventually turn into a wonderful, alpine single trail that rides all the way to Medergen. The Walser settlement is on our way down to Langwies. This is the first and only ascent of the day. This leads over 540 vertical meters on a road to Strassberg and then another 200 vertical meters to the Durannapass, but this time on gravel roads and single trails. Right by the Durannapass is the lovely Grüensee, an ideal place for a break and the starting point for the long descent to Küblis. This first leads over the plateau to Alp Fideriser Duranna and then over many single trails, occasionally interrupted by short sections on gravel, down to Küblis. This descent is ten kilometers and over 1300 Elevation loss long! In Küblis, take the Rhaetian Railway and let it take you back to Davos.

Definitely not an e-bike tour because of the steps on the way down. The descent to Langwies is very nice. Before and after Durannapass it is very muddy and has to be pushed again and again. The cows have left their mark on the path. From Alp Obersäss the path is very overgrown and it feels like there are 100 fences. From Duranna, biking is prohibited because of the moor. For better or worse, you have to descend 100m on the gravel path at least as far as Moosboden. Moosboden is also very boggy and a nature reserve, probably not ideal for biking.
The descent from the Durannapass is not very worthwhile for me. For me, everything except the cow pasture was rideable but always steep, so that you are constantly pressing on the windows. Overall great, I would look for an alternative for the Durann Pass

Tour done on 2.9.23. Very nice tour. Back to Davos via Gotschnagrat (panoramic super tour). It might be difficult for E-MTBs to carry the bike down.

Rode the tour on July 16. Nice round trip with a variety of trails and scenery. Trail from Duranapass also has a few challenging sections.
We would definitely do it again

What a cool tour. Technically demanding. Only for experienced bikers who are sure-footed :-) The descents are tough, always demand concentration, but are great fun.
Very beautiful scenery.

Wonderful route - peppered with everything that a tour with so many meters of altitude has to offer. Sometimes cool, sometimes flowy, sometimes muddy (that's also part of MTB! ), sometimes b(l)ocky :-) - Fantastic panorama! - Way back via Gotschnagrat and down to Davos: https://youtu.be/yYrj9V927lY

Hey great video :-) can you maybe send me the GPX data of this extended tour? LG Andi

Beautiful tour, but very steep and muddy from Strassberg to Durannapass -> lots of pushing passages! The trail from Durannapass to Alp Fideriser Duranna is not maintained and quite overgrown, therefore not recommended. The official trail currently rides along the forest road up to the alp. Afterwards, unfortunately, there are always other signposted bike trails, so it's easy to take the wrong turn-off, which unfortunately happened to us. The tour will therefore be repeated at some point.

One of the most rewarding and scenic things I've done this year. We had a lot of fun. Then we also did Gotschnagrat - Davos, also recommended! It's all very rideable for trail bikers, but I wouldn't recommend it for beginners.

As we all know, taste is debatable... I myself found the descent from the Durannapass absolutely unrewarding. Lots of mud, considerable sections through an (ecologically sensitive) moor, broken up by a few meadow trails and about 25% rewarding trails. I think there are better trails in the region.

Rode the tour on July 20: Overall top tour, highly recommended for both the trail and the landscape experience. Carrying the bike down the Tritt was much more relaxed than expected - it was also dry and without snow/ice when we were there. Below the kick, it is quite bumpy for around 500 meters. However, this is the only section that is manageable and only partially rideable. Down to Küblis, it's boggy for about 1 km, which could be unpleasant after prolonged rain because it's more than ankle-deep. But that's it for the "challenges". The rest is mostly flowy and simply beautiful.

We rode the tour on 25.7.20, the (moor) descent to Küblis was also very wet for us, but still fun.
We then extended the tour a little and added the Meierhoftrail via Gotschnabahn to get back to Davos. Great job, beer deserved!

Checked 2020

Rode the tour today. Very nice. But it is only difficult after the kick. That's why I gave it three rather than four points for riding technique. There are still larger snowfields from time to time and the northern descent to Küblis is extremely wet. Overall, however, definitely worthwhile.
