Kunkelspass

The Kunkelspass is a cycling classic. If you add a few single trails to the descent to Tamins, it is also attractive for bikers.

Description

Ideally, you should start the tour over the Kunkelspass at Landquart station and then climb up to Pfäfers. This is followed by the long and only slightly ascending section through the Tamina Valley. The route becomes steeper after Vättis, but is easy to master. The Kunkelspass is a well-deserved mountain pass. At the top of the pass, the downhill trail through the gorge begins on the opposite side of the alpine meadow. Cross the mountain road on this trail and then keep left at the edge of the forest above towards Benis Boden. The descent to the banks of the Rhine begins at an old stable, which you follow to Chur. The return journey to Landquart is either by train or always along the right bank of the Rhine.

Note: Bikes are officially prohibited on the hiking trail from Kunkelspass through the "Foppa-Loch" to Benis Boden. Riding the route is at the discretion and responsibility of each individual.

Tour ridden on 15.7.24.
At KM 44 the path is washed away, no way through. Just stay on the asphalt road for about 1 km instead of turning into the trail on the Rhine dam.

The Foppaloch descent and a small section near Felsberg are bike-free, but can be ridden well if there are not too many hikers on the trail.

I assume that the riding technique in the Foppaloch is rated highly, as it is relatively steep in places for S2. 5/6 but also clearly too high in my opinion.

I rode the tour on June 15, 2023. A great scenic route, but the descent is far too short in relation to the ascent, but still worthwhile in any case. The return trip to Landquart along the Rhine is a nice way to end the tour.

We rode the tour today. The ascent is great. But it felt endless. The trail, starting from the top of the pass, is pretty straight down. Accordingly, you only have a little trail fun in relation to the time spent climbing. The trails along the Rhine are beautiful and super flowy.
The tour is definitely not a 5 out of 6 in terms of technical difficulty. Everything S2! 1-2 S2+ sections.
Conclusion: nice tour. Long up, too fast down. Flow comes along the Rhine. Then a beer in the old town of Chur.

A brilliant tour!

Bonus: at Benisboden P. 789 there is a perfect Swiss family with tables, barbecue grill, lots of wood and a well with fresh water. Then follow the hiking trail down through the Eichwald forest to Pradamal, super flowy!

Bonus 2: then from Trimis by post bus to Flims Waldhaus and via Caumasee, Conn, Digg to Tamins. Lots of nice swimming spots along the Rhine! Then all along the Rhine (in addition to the cycle path, there is always a trail that strictly follows the bank) back to Landquart.

Free PP at the Sarelli power station after Landquart

I absolutely cannot understand the assessment of the riding technique at 5/6. The descent through the Foppaloch is a solid S2 in terms of difficulty with one S3 section (right-hand bend with steps).
