Lady Patricia (Bomber-Trail)

Abendstimmung

In 1944, a US bomber named "Lady Patricia" crashed on the Dreibündenstein. This tour, which rides from the Dreibündenstein down to Domleschg, is named after the memorial site.

Description

The Bomber Tour starts on Brambrüesch, where the gondola lift takes you up from the center of Chur. You then climb up to Malixer Alp, follow the ski lift and traverse the Dreibündenstein to Term Bel at Alp di Plaun. Here you will also find the Lady Patricia memorial stone, which gives this tour its name. In November 1944, a US bomber crashed here and the occupants were able to save themselves by parachute. The route now rides around the Feldiser Alp (Alp da Veulden) down to Retga. A mix of single trails and forest roads takes you through the steep Val Graunda down to Scheid. The singletrail shortcuts along the former access road from Tomils to Scheid take you to the outskirts of Rothenbrunnen. Now follow the Polenweg to Domat/Ems and finally take the first-class Rheinufer Trail to the Rossböden near Chur.

Many of the previous writers are unfortunately right. The top tail at the beginning of the tour is unfortunately almost impossible to ride, even experienced and good riders fail at the latest when the pedals no longer fit through the worn pastureland and its ruts. It has nothing to do with skill, sometimes it's simply impossible. It gets a little better from the alpine hut onwards. On the recommendation of locals, we then changed the tour and probably missed the beautiful part. But the views and scenery are great! But perhaps more for hiking ;-)

Beautiful trail. I can only partially agree with the unrideable. The washed-out sections are rideable except in a few places, but are very technical and require precise and technical riding.

The climb itself is tough, but afterwards you are rewarded with a beautiful view. Especially beautiful in the fall with the golden trees.

We also recommend a short break in the mountain hut after the Lady Patricia Trail to fortify yourself for the rest. Super friendly staff and delicious homemade cakes

The post bus to Chur only rides every hour at the weekend. Otherwise it takes about an hour to get back to Chur. This is a leisurely ride.

I rode the tour on 21.09.2023 and can agree with Mäkke's comment, at least as far as the first part is concerned. Especially the section just before and the whole passage after the monument is not rideable. The gullies are extremely deep and washed out, too narrow to pedal.

The descent from Mutta down to the valley is - apart from the passages on gravel/tar - a pleasure. But here, too, you have to watch out for washed-out sections, as the path breaks off into the valley in places.

In my opinion, there are too many good and beautiful trails in the immediate vicinity for this one to be worth riding.

We rode the tour on 15.7.23. I can only agree with Jonas. You push the bike from the end of the gravel road to Term Bel. Either like us on the hiking trail around the summit. A narrow gully, the sides so high that you can't pedal. Quite overgrown. According to bikers we met, it should be similar from the summit down. At Term Bel, the Lady Patricia Trail of the Ride separates from the Dreibündenstein/Lady Patricia Trail of the Bike Kingdom app. The latter goes down the gravel road and then turns left onto trails and reaches the valley further north. It should be doable in both directions. We followed the ride version here. We continue pushing in the same style until Mutta. After that, many meters of altitude are lost on gravel and concrete roads. At a signpost, the trail branches off the road into the forest. This took us into a fairly large logging area. Over trees and down through. Really tedious. The rest of the trail is moderately maintained and overgrown. From Rothenbrunnen back to Chur via forest roads and streets. Not worthwhile overall.
The stretch to Mutta would be a wonderful hike or trail run because of the landscape and the magnificent views.

As described in previous comments, the route from the Hühnerköpfe to Term Bel and on to Mutta is barely maintained. There is hardly any riding fun, which is why the tour is not worthwhile in my opinion.

Checked 2020

I haven't ridden the tour yet, but as a local I recommend keeping right at Rothenbrunnen before entering the village and taking the gravel road towards Oberjuvalt Castle (Er Sura). You pass the village on a hill with about 100 meters of single trail. There are two beautiful places with a view where it is worth taking a break. If you have enough time, you can also indulge in culinary delights at Oberjuvalt Castle (https://www.burg-oberjuvalt.ch/). However, the bike must be left behind (locked) at the playground further down the trail (Er Sura) or hidden somewhere.

Hoi

We rode the trail yesterday. The ascent up to the chicken heads is good. However, the traverse is not really rideable, which is less due to a lack of technique than to the narrow, deep path, so that you almost always touch down with your pedals, even if you only glide with the pedals in a horizontal position. So there is no flow. Sometimes there was a ditch every 20 cm, which had either been trodden by cows or created as drainage. Either way, no fun.

From the Term Bel ski hut, things got a little better. Part of the way down is on small roads, some on wonderful single trails. The scenery is great, but in its current state the upper part is anything but a highlight.

Greetings Patrick

Hello everyone

I did the tour yesterday (16.10.2016).
The uphill to the chicken heads is easy to ride. At the traverse where you come to the memorial stone, the trail is no longer so nice to ride. Later, before the Term Bel ski hut, it is more of a trampled path of cows than a trail
After the Term Bel ski hut, there is a small uphill and then it finally starts to flow a little and stays that way until Mutta :-)! Below Mutta I couldn't find the trail at first. The trail starts below the restaurant and simply rides across the meadow. Further down, the forest road begins, which becomes a trail again and vice versa. In the village of Scheid, you ride down on an asphalt road (concrete) and can shorten the road again and again with single trails, whereby the trails have passages that are rated 4 on the difficulty scale.
Once you arrive in Rothenbrunnen, you then roll comfortably along the Polenweg to Domat/Ems.
In my opinion, it would be cool if you could add a few more single trails to this section, it would only add to the tour.

My final conclusion:
To make the tour really fun, you should definitely have a very good command of Bike Technique 4.
