Laubegg (Walensee)

The Laubegg tour high above Lake Walen is considered one of the most impressive tours in Eastern Switzerland and leads along a meadow band through the impressive rock towers of the Churfirsten mountains.

Description

The long ascent towards the Churfirsten begins in the village of Walenstadt. From here, it seems impossible that a trail could run through the mighty rock formations above Lake Walen. The first part of the tour is a 1000-metre ascent over the Walenstadter Berg past the Kurhaus to Alp Schwaldis. From here, an alpine path begins, which becomes increasingly steeper and, after the Sälser Alp, turns into a technically demanding single trail just below the impressive rock formations of the Churfirsten. Lake Walen lies almost vertically below us, the scenery in this terrain is unique and impressive. Continue along the trail, which initially winds its way up and down the rock formation. At Alp Laubegg, the trail then drops steeply until it turns into an alpine road in a small ravine. Follow this road via Seeren and through the village of Betlis to the shores of Lake Walen. A small road now leads to Weesen. The return journey to Walenstadt is ideally by train from Ziegelbrücke.

Alternatives: Instead of over the Walenstadter Berg, ascend from Walenstadt via Lüsis to Alp Tschingla and follow the single trail along the rock formations to Alp Schwaldis.

I rode the tour today on my e-bike in great fall weather.

There were hardly any hikers on the trails.

A magnificent panorama and great, crisp trails - a perfect combination.

The trails were all in very good condition.

Thanks for the great tour!

Five of us rode the tour today and had great fall conditions. Super panorama and crisp trails, what more could you want. Trails in good condition.

Tour ridden on 7 September 24 with my Specialized Enduro Expert. Ascent over asphalt well doable. On the descent some stretches due to storm wood, stones and washed out ditches. Had company with e-bike. Tour rather unsuitable for e-bikers. Trail very rideable from the Quinten junction. Before that, a few technical sections with steeply sloping terrain. For my part, I won't ride the tour a second time. The effort and reward are not right.

Rode today. Hot (4 liters of water were barely enough, although I took the bus from Walenstadt to Walenstadtberg to reduce the climb, which wasn't very nice up to that point). Be careful, it's better to take too much water with you, there's no more after the Alp.

The trail itself is in a worse condition than before, a lot of very loose gravel, which in combination with the extreme steepness around Laubegg and the risk of falling is suboptimal. In my opinion, the balance between torture and risk on the one hand and riding enjoyment on the other is no longer right, despite the panorama. You don't necessarily need a lot of suspension travel, but you should choose very, very solid tires with good grip (I rode a Conti Kryptotal Re Trail and a Michelin Wild Enduro Front and still had to fight brutally for grip on the Laubegg at the latest).

Unfortunately, I can no longer recommend the tour overall, as impressive as it is. If you do it, then with great riding technique and without an e-bike (the carrying distance isn't long, but it's tough even with a 14.5 kg bike).

Did the tour on 30.9. 2023 in dry conditions. According to Garmin approx. 1250 HM. Pure riding time approx. 3.15H. The pushing and carrying passages were short (5 minutes) Trail into the valley partly with sharp bends and a few technically demanding passages. You can stock up on cheese beforehand at Alp Schwaldis. Great panorama - although the weather was cloudy.

Tour is not suitable after rain. The dirt up there is very sticky, doesn't come off the bike and tires and then you slide around on the technical sections.

Today on 8.6.23 rode the "alternative" Lüsis - Tschingla - Obersäss by ebike and then on the original route. Geographically absolutely great, but between Alp Tschingla and Vordersäss a lot of it is not rideable, which means pushing quite often. Would I go through there again? No. In my opinion, this extra effort is not worth it.
Otherwise I found very good conditions. Shortly before Stäfeli there is still old avalanche snow, but it can be pushed through at the top.
Pack your swimming trunks for a dip in the water at the Lago Mio swimming pool in Weesen.

Check 21.05.2023, no snow.

The ascent is very strenuous, but the view is fantastic.

Downhill section with various technical sections.

Mainly in front of Säsl and afterwards still some snow in gullies, otherwise very rewarding as always!

I rode in the rain yesterday and it went better than expected. Yes, there are sliding passages and yes, it is slippery. I'm not a very good downhill rider and had to get off again and again, but all in all it was ok.
At the end of the climb there is a very steep root section where you have to push or carry. As already mentioned below, this is certainly very unpleasant on an e-bike. But the section is not long.
In the descent, there is a steep, blocked section in the middle that is only for experienced S3/S4 riders. However, the rest (with a few exceptions here and there) should be manageable for most bikers in dry conditions.
I was on the road with a Marathon Fully, which is basically sufficient.
There were trees across the path 2-3 times, but never in dangerous places - at least not at my speed.

My GPS measured approx. 1250m. Maybe it was a bit more, but no more than 1400.

The tour is also recommended as a hike - e.g. with a non-biker partner.

The panorama is supposed to be gigantic!

The view is great, the flow minimal. The ascent at the end is tedious with a normal bike (dragging uphill over high roots and ditches). I don't have an e-bike but I don't think it would be much fun.

you have to do it

We rode the route yesterday. I don't think the closure has been in force since August. We only met three hikers up to the Quinten junction. From there down to the road 80 more. No joke! If possible, the tour should be ridden during the week or when the weather is not so good (the tour is very difficult in wet weather). Otherwise it's no fun.

Trail has been closed since May 19, 2018 due to rockfall from Fulenbach! Alternative to Quinten is unfortunately not possible, as riding is prohibited and the ferry from Quinten does not transport mountain bikes.

I tackled the tour today and it took me about 5 hours. It was really tough, as the descent can hardly be managed on the saddle when the ground is soaked. I would definitely like to do it again in dry weather. The panorama is really great and you are really off the beaten track.
Ideally, you should have a good breakfast, as you can only stop for refreshments in Strahlegg (approx. 20 minutes before Weesen).
It was a really nice tour, technically challenging and very idyllic landscapes with a great view.

Cheers!

So, I tackled the tour today! Parked the car in Ziegelbrücke and took the train to Walenstadt.
The ascent starts at a leisurely pace and then gets steeper and steeper. At the beginning everything is asphalted and you make good progress. After Schwaldis it is then a dirt road. After a short descent, there is the final ascent, which includes a short carrying passage.
The descent is relatively technical, but easily manageable. From time to time there is a bit of a flow feeling. Towards the end of the tour you have a beautiful view of Lake Walen.
It took me around 3 hours, so it's more of a half-day tour. It was still relatively wet, so I recommend avoiding the tour in wet conditions.

Greetings

Hello, that's definitely too many meters in altitude (as somehow on many tours on the new HP). I did the tour and it was (according to memory) about 1400-1500hm. Merci and greetings Andi
