Monte Tamaro | Ride MTB

Monte Tamaro

The tour from Monte Tamaro to Agno is a classic among bike tours in Switzerland. It leads almost exclusively along single trails and mostly downhill.

Description

The tour starts preferably at the mountain station of the Monte Tamaro cable car. From here, there is a steep ascent to the antenna and the (catered) Capanna Monte Tamaro. Follow the difficult trail to just below the summit and take the serpentine path to Bassa di Indemini. The trail now becomes smoother and descends gently to Arosio. Caution: The Monte Ferraro is circumnavigated on the western side, so the singletrail section is considerably higher than on the "official" route on the eastern side. In Arosio, ride further south, take the mountain path to Cademario, from there continue west of San Bernardo to Cimo and take the direct route downhill to Agno. The tour is preferably finished directly on the shores of Lago di Lugano.

I rode the tour as described with the turnoff at La Bássa on 26.10.2025. The trail was in good condition, apart from a lot of foliage, which was to be expected at this time of year. I didn't see any fallen trees either.

Great tour, just the trail after the junction towards Lema is for nothing, better stay on the upper (official) trail, the lower one is no longer maintained, trees lying across, etc.

The tour is very doable with the E-MTB, not as labeled by Ride as "moderately suited for E-Mountainbikes". Completed the tour with the new gondola lift on 29.9.25. Always super cool. If you haven't had enough in Agno, you can add the "Pista MTB" down to Ponte Tresa.

This tour is part of every visit to Ticino. But today was the first time we rode it by eBike, as the trail is still not open.
Trail is in very good condition, everything rideable, no obstacles and was almost deserted!
It was great to ride on an eBike if you're used to technical enduro descents. This time I even had more fun with the eBike than with the enduro bio-bike. All the technical climbs in the middle section are easier to master.
As always, the Capanna Monte Tamaro hut had good cake, now even a small bike service station and various eBike chargers (the fact that your own is not included and each manufacturer has its own "standard" is another story).
Starting from the Rivera-Bironico train station, according to Garmin it was 1470 vertical meters to Agno.
From my 720Wh battery in the YT Decoy, there were just under 30km of range left at the end (almost always ridden in trail mode), the battery in the rented Flyer with 630Wh was just enough to reach the rental station in Lugano.

Attention: the cable car will not ride again until 2025 due to new construction. With the whole uphill we covered over 2000m. Tour not ridden for 2 years. Trail could use some maintenance. In the upper part there are about 6 trees in the trail.

Today, 2 August 2024.6 with my Specialized Enduro. One of the best tours I've ever done in Ticino. Very rideable, with a few technical obstacles. Various passages such as gravel, forest floor, root passages, flowing paths etc. It was great! Tour can also be ridden well on an e-bike if the rider rides well. Return to the Ceneri via the cycle path. Thanks to Börki for guiding.

I rode the tour in mid-September. Condition is very good. I had to get back to Rivera before dark, so I rode the official trail from Arosio to Bedano. This is very washed out, but tempts you to speed up at the top because of some tables and steep bends. I almost went flying in the washed-out gullies.
The rest are beautiful natural trails, beautiful forest in the fall.

After the rains, the path before La Bassa slipped for a few meters, but you can get through on foot without any problems. We went from Arosio directly to Taverne via the Schweiz Mobil Trail, but it is very washed out and looks more like a stream. The rest of the trail is in great condition.

Around the summit - uphill and trail in the tree-free zone are S3. In the forest, the "Tamaro alternative" is better. This is followed by a slightly exposed, endless S1.

Nice tour. Rode it today 10.9.22. During the thunderstorm on 8.9.22 a part of the hiking trail below Cimo was washed away. (by the stream, 40m below Cimo). We were able to master the passage with a lot of foreshadowing.

August 25, 2022, written in the morning over coffee. Have ridden the Lugano Bike No. 66 stages from Agno Lago Lugano Camping. In my opinion, stage 3 Monte Tamaro - Miglieglia is a cool tour and some challenges. Stages 1 Monte Bré (without the train ride) to Pairolo and 2 via San Lucio to Rivera are the nicer ones. Stage 4 falls a little behind the others but is a passable finish. The routes to Agno and to each of the start locations add up to a few kilometers. So we had 4 great eMTB days. Best regards, Frank

Almost everything has already been said. Great trail and always good.
Just above Arosio there is a short trail instead of taking the forest road (straight down again when you reach the forest road).
A local at Arosio recommended that we take the DH trail instead of following the ride track. Since this year, it has also been signposted as Monte Tamaro Bike. You come down near Lampone and can take a direct train connection to Rivera (if you don't want to pedal anymore)

I rode the tour on 27.5. It's one of the best I've ever ridden!
The ascent from the gondola to the Capanna is very steep and rocky, and I had to push on longer sections. The high-level trail to the summit and the following hairpin bends are technically challenging and unforgiving in the steep terrain. But then comes pure fun with lots of flow. There are also some tricky sections in between, all of which can be ridden with a little courage.
A sensational tour!

For those who are wondering whether the Tamaro still has snow:
Yes, it still has snow! The ascent on the north side is covered with many snow fields. With a normal bike and good shoes, you can push or carry them. The e-bikers were not so happy.
The descent on the south side is then perfect.

The paths are clear of fallen trees again!
Thanks for the tip about La Bassa!

I ride the trail regularly. My fun optimized version: Upper part of the Tamaro Trail (many holes and fallen trees that are apparently no longer cleared away) Arosio Trail instead of Tamaro Trail; Monte Ferraro West (Trailforks: La Bassa); in Arosio the Arisio DH to Bedano. The last part to Bedano (Trailfork trail) could be bypassed.

The ascent to the antenna is always worth a bet: whoever makes it without getting off deserves a reward in the evening. Out of 12 riders, only 3 made it :)
The mountain trail up to the junction is very demanding: steep short climbs (all rideable) alternate with slate-strewn passages (almost all rideable).
After the junction, the first part through the scree field is not for beginners, you should not fall here - if you are not confident on your bike, you should push the first 3 hairpin bends.
The further you ride, the more flowy the trail becomes and you can let go of the brakes from time to time. At the "La Bassa" junction, don't follow the signs, but ride right across the meadow and circle Monte Ferraro on the right. The trail is a little trickier with some nice technical passages and also leads to Arosio.

1.6.2021 Tour well rideable. There are still some snowfields, but they are no longer frozen and therefore easy to pass.
Meeeega great tour!!! Thanks Ride!!!

June 17, 2021: In the first third there are still a few trees on the path, some of which are quite difficult to avoid.

Still a lot of snow on the ridge. Was doable, but not recommended at the moment.
Better to wait another 10 days

The tour is currently accessible, but under difficult conditions. From Pt. 1575 up to the antenna there is still quite a lot of snow, at noon already quite softened and much frequented (hikers on Mte Tamaro), therefore quite feasible. From the ridge in front of Ul Mött Tund, ascend to the summit; the hiking trail on the northern flank is still snow-covered and hard in places even after 12 noon. Danger of falling when slipping, therefore currently a no-go. From the summit to the junction at Pt. 1838, it gets a bit creative - you stay on the ridge for a relatively long time, so there are one or two places where you need a hand (approx. T4?).
Descent part 1 good. At around 1655 there is a Y-fork, the bike signpost points up, the GPS track points down. We rode the bottom (GPS track), has quite a few fallen trees in it and is quite washed out. I would suggest trying the upper variant next time ;) The bike path comes back into the route later from above.
The rest: great condition. Cool tour.

The tour is currently not possible as there is still at least 50 cm of snow on the road from the gondola. There was also a risk of avalanches. I then rode down the DH route. It's very rideable at the top despite lots of scree. The middle section in the forest was challenging, as there was a lot of foliage on the route and smaller stones and roots were not visible. The bottom section was too technically difficult for me as the terrain was very rough. Great experience despite everything

Monte Tamaro

Great bike tour! We parked in Mezzovico. From there, you pedal a few kilometers to the valley station of the gondola (but it's not so far on the way home). Once you've reached the top in the gondola, you can expect a fairly tough but manageable climb (rough gravel in places, a few steps and rather steep).

However, the descent is really great and a welcome contrast to all the boring flow trails that are currently being built everywhere. The trail has some rocky sections, roots, smaller and larger ledges and some faster sections to ride in between. Perfect for enduro bikes! In Arosio, we then took the hiking trail directly down to Bedano so that the way back wasn't so long. This was the most demanding part of the whole tour and a challenge even for experienced bikers.

The whole tour is definitely not recommended for beginners. At around 17 km, the descent is super long and really only for experienced riders. Beginners have to descend again and again to pass more difficult sections and that is definitely no fun. Don't be fooled by the ride rating "riding technique 3/6"...

What a tour! Panoramic views, trails, really great! and a real ride tour! The ascent to Capanna Tamaro is crisp, whoever rides it all has power in their calves! There are some steep steps in the upper part, which I didn't ride all the way to the Pt1838 saddle before Monte Tamaro. From then on it becomes smoother, but still has higher steps, which are best dropped with a little momentum instead of slowly tumbling over them. At Arosio I was glad to have some tar under my wheels again, it was quite shaking and bumpy at times. From Arosio and Gademario onwards, the road becomes faster and more flowy. At Cimo, it's better to ride down the road to Bioggio. The ride tours always find hiking paths/trails right to the end, but it's not much fun there, there are steps and the lowest part is even closed. Better to let it roll out a bit ;-)

Unfortunately, due to logging, a right section before Monte Ferraro is currently closed. You are diverted onto the road! This means you bypass a large section of singletrail!
Otherwise in top condition.
I would be interested to know which is the best descent (preferably singletrail) from Arosio to Agno.
I always have problems finding the way...

After the Route 66 was renovated, this tour is now S1. No more Enduro rod, unfortunately now is only for beginners.
Embarrassing

We just rode the route yesterday. What a brilliant experience! The single trails are just awesome. But I definitely wouldn't recommend the route to beginners.

Accidentally ended up on the official Lugano bike route today. What a disaster. Make sure this doesn't happen to you. Really makes me cry, how can you signpost such a route...

This tour is simply awesome! Single trails without end.

The ascent has to be hard fought. Most of us push the bike to the summit.

The descent from Monte Tamaro is very technical at the start and sometimes exposed. But then it becomes smoother and easier. But there is always a challenge every now and then. For me up to S3.

A must if you are in Ticino.
