Motto d'Arbino

Motto d'Arbino

The Motto d'Arbino is located high above Bellinzona and offers a beautiful panorama of Lake Maggiore as well as a crisp descent through birch forests.

Description

From Bellinzona train station, ride past the football stadium to the River Ticino and follow it upstream. Follow the Moesa river along the Veloland route in the direction of Roveredo. At the bridge over the Moesa, however, you stay on the same bank and follow a trail until you reach Roveredo. This is where the 1500-metre ascent up to Alpe di Gesero begins. Initially on a steep alpine path, a steadily ascending road then leads up to Laura and on to the tunnel at Alpe Cardinello.

This is the highest point of the tour, and a short descent takes you to the Alpe di Gesero, which offers refreshments. Continue along the little road to the next alp (Alpe della Costa) and climb a few more meters to the Motto d'Arbino steeply above Bellinzona. The following trail rides over the southwest ridge to Monti di Paudo with a unique view of the Magadino plain. Up here, the trails are quite flowy, but the further down you get, the rougher they become in typical Ticino style. In principle, you always follow the path signposted as a hiking trail to reach Giubiasco. Finally, you reach the picturesque old town of Bellinzona on neighborhood streets and thus the perfect setting to toast the tour.

Alternatives

  • Ascent from Bellinzona through the Valle d'Arbedo
  • From the Alpe di Gesero on the trail via the Alpe d'Urno to Piano Dolce

I rode the tour in October 2025 with a direct ascent through the Vall d'Arbedo. It's a bit shorter and a bit sunnier, especially in the fall. I still find the descent from Motto d'Arbino to Bellinzona a highlight, very smooth at the top, then rougher further down (as is typical of Ticino).

We rode the tour at the end of May - a really great and worthwhile tour!
We recommend stopping for a bite to eat at Ristorante Bola in Laura, the climb is long.
From Paudo, we took the Paudo trail because we were a little unsure about the ride route to Paudo.
The Paudo trail meanders easily but beautifully through the forest almost all the way down.

I rode the tour today and really enjoyed it.
Even the last part, which was criticized in the previous post, went completely over the hiking trail, all the way down. However, this part consists largely of stairs, but it was still fun.
I certainly haven't ridden this tour for the last time! Many thanks

We rode this tour on 30.05.2021. Even we still had some snowfields where we had to carry or push the bike. Luckily it was only a few, maybe 100m in total (yes, it was a hard winter). How 'beneschxix' managed this tour on May 9th is a mystery to me, it must have been sheer horror. Turning around would have been an option, and sometimes a life-saving measure in the mountains ...

Unfortunately, the first 200 meters of the descent are spent on a road. From 'Alpe della Costa' the fun begins. At the beginning you still have to fight a bit, but later it really is a very varied trail firework display in a class of its own. There are also many technical sections. I was able to ride everything, but I can imagine that pensioners, e-bikers or Sunday bikers will have to dismount here (S1/S2).

We tried a trail here from 'Paudo' as described here in the comments. Unfortunately, super technical and no longer a pleasure for me either (Strava segment 'DH Prada' a lousy S3). Try it from 'Paudo' at 'Monti di Pedevilla' in the direction of 'Monti di Ravecchia' and then a little further up to altitude 881 and then down to Artore.
You can also eat in 'Laura', for example, where there is a small restaurant right at the entrance to the village with delicious spaghetti. So you should start at 09:00 in Bellinzona, then you'll be in Laura around midday at a relaxed pace.

Despite everything, it was a great ride with potential for optimization. You have to be fit and have the bike under control (switchbacks, drops, etc.).

We "tried" the tour today. Fortunately, we shuttled as far as Vif. From the first tunnel, the road to Laura is closed. There are trees, rubble etc. behind the tunnel. But it's easy to get through on a bike. A few hundred meters after Laura, however, the snow begins on the alpine road and this continues all the way up to the tunnel. The last 400-500m to the tunnel are completely covered with snow, sometimes several meters, from the sloping terrain above the road and you need to be sure-footed with your bike on this last section. You can get into the tunnel - but there is bare ice all the way to the other end. After that, the alpine path is still heavily covered with snow. We continued past the Capanna Gesero in the snow and at Alpe Pisciarotondo we switched to the southern slope as we had had enough after three hours of pushing and carrying in the snow. We made it as far as Alpe Croveggia. But from there it's no longer an alternative via Alpe d'Urno to Piano Dolce. The path has no maintenance - lots of fallen trees - an uhuara Kramp. From Piano Dolce it's great. I would wait until at least the beginning of June to do this tour. It wasn't fun today, but it was an adventure :-)

Rode the tour on Saturday 10.10.2020. From Bellinzona a leisurely ride to Roveredo. From there the almost never-ending ascent begins. The gradient is pleasant and you make good progress. Before the village of Laura, there is a short tunnel where you can switch on the lights, but the light is not long enough to get through. We took a break in Laura and enjoyed the view. We rode through the tunnel to Alpe di Cadinello without lights, a cell phone lamp would be enough. The road up to Capanna Gensero has some storm damage. We were kindly served in the hut and fortified ourselves.
From point 1622 the great trail begins to Paudo. There we followed the road and met a local who showed us a great and technical trail. If you didn't have any major problems on the tour, you'll really get your money's worth here. The last section between Sassei and Palasio is again very technical and crisp. We therefore had a very high proportion of singletrail and we will certainly do the tour again.

Rode today. The trail down from Motto d'Arbino is great. Nice and technical, but all rideable. Otherwise, the singletrail section is far too small. I don't miss it too much on the ascent. But on the descent, there are only small sections after Paudo - otherwise everything follows the road. The hiking trail shortcuts are not always an option either: some of them are simply endless stairs... Too bad, the landscape is very beautiful and without the frustration of losing hard-won meters of altitude on the road, this would be a great tour.

I ride this tour at least once a year. At Paudo, you should go up the road a bit to the hairpin bend. Then take the trail and keep right. Cross the river and ride straight down after a small climb. Also at the little church. Then you come out near the hospital and have a very high proportion of singletrail.
