Niederhorn (Thun-Interlaken) | Ride MTB

Niederhorn (Thun-Interlaken)

The Niederhorn lies magnificently above Lake Thun and opposite the mighty mountains of the Bernese Oberland. This backdrop characterizes the mountain bike route from Thun to Interlaken as well as the single trails in all levels of difficulty.

Description

From Thun, take the mountain road up to Schwendi, although this ascent could also be made by local bus. A few more meters in altitude follow before the first descent begins at Margelsattel. Descend over the mountain to Schwanden and from here through the Staldegrabe directly into the center of Sigriswil. On the panoramic road, you now climb up to Schmocken (Beatenberg) and from here on an increasingly steep gravel path to the summit of the Niederhorn. A mountain railroad also rides to the summit, but it does not transport mountain bikers. The single trail to Oberburgfeld is very technical and forces some of you to walk. After Oberburgfeld, the trail becomes smoother and leads into the Rischeretobel ravine and soon descends to Waldegg on the other side of the valley. Just after the last houses, the brilliant singletrail final section begins via Rüti to the banks of the Lombach. From here, it's just a stone's throw to Interlaken, from where you can take the train back to Thun.

A fantastically beautiful tour in terms of scenery and therefore highly recommended. However, if you are looking for beautiful single trails, you won't be very happy on this tour. A lot of road (unfortunately also downhill) and some difficult, very bumpy trails. In between there is a short trail pearl every now and then.

I rode the tour on 17.6. The scenery is first class. The view of the lake and the snow-covered mountains is fantastic. From Vorsass to Niederhorn, I had to push the bike most of the way. From Niederhorn to Waldegg, you have to be a very good biker to ride a lot. The part from Waldegg to Interlaken is very flowy as described. I would ride the tour again at any time. The panorama and nature make up for the many meters in altitude.

Scenically beautiful tour. However, in wet conditions, the section from Oberburgfeldstand to Waldegg should be avoided for the sake of nature, in my opinion. It is partly a swamp and moorland area, so riding is rather difficult either way and the bikes leave large tracks/furrows in the idyllic path.
