Piz Umbrail

Piz Umbrail

Goldsee Trail, Tibet Trail, Bocchetta di Forcola - countless singletrail highlights are hidden around the Umbrail Pass and the Stelvio Pass. The descent from Piz Umbrail into Val Mora stands in the shadow of these well-known routes. It is actually the true highlight of the region.

Description

The best way to get to the Umbrail Pass is by post bus, but the 1125-metre ascent can also be tackled on the pass road under your own steam. However, the crisp ascent phase only begins after the pass summit. On a single trail, you push and carry your bike for 500 meters up to Piz Umbrail at 3033 meters above sea level. The ascent is energy-sapping, but well worth it. The descent to the Lai da Rims is super fun in the high Alps; the trail winds its way through the rugged mountain landscape. After the Rims lake, the route is a little more technical, peppered with many hairpin bends, but still good and fun to ride. Finally, you reach the stream in Val Vau, having already ridden over 1000 meters in altitude, and the final section ahead is familiar to many from tours into the well-known Val Mora. After the first trails as a shortcut to the gravel road, you follow it to a mountain ridge, where the trail then leads down to the right through the dense forest to the edge of the village of Sta. Maria.

Note: The Piz Umbrail summit ascent is a popular mountain tour. Good footwear, surefootedness and a head for heights are recommended for the ascent. Due to the sometimes numerous hikers, a particularly considerate approach is required, especially in the section after the lake. This section is bypassed on the tour version "Piz Umbrail extended.

I rode the tour on July 12, 2025. However, we also took the trail from the Stilfserjoch to the Umbrail and then climbed up to the Bochetta die Forcola (webcode #1221). This climb is an absolute highlight and almost completely rideable. From there we climbed up to Punta da Rims, riding and pushing about 50/50 due to the steepness. From there, we then descended over a scree field back onto the trail, which was rather arduous. Up to the lake, the trail was quite rough in places, but from the lake onwards, the surface was almost "flowy". Technically, however, it was very demanding before and after the lake, just enough to suit my preferences (especially after the lake). The descent through the Val Vau is then fast and fun and of course much less technical. We then climbed a few more metres on the opposite side in Valchava and took a few more trails with us to Müstair.
I ride a Scott Genius Ultimate and am usually in the head group uphill; downhill, I'm always the last one by a long way.

Rode the tour exactly according to the GPX but started with the bike in Sta Maria - makes a total of approx. 1600 hm.
You rarely sink into the snow on the ascent. Some snow is bypassed.
When carrying the bike, it's not bad if you have one hand free to hold on to the chain or rocky outcrops.
The first approx. 200 Elevation loss are still several, longer snow fields that are better pushed.
From approx. 2700 m, almost everything is snow-free on the descent.
Very cool high alpine tour with hands-on experience ;-)

Tour done today with the Ebike! Ascent via punta di rims 80 percent rideable otherwise everything easy to push.

Tour today at 1200 h from Santa Maria. Summit 1600 h. Not a soul from Umbrailpass. No snow on the ascent, but surefootedness essential. Descent very disappointing. Lots of loose gravel almost as far as the lake. A few small snowfields no problem. In my opinion, the best part comes after the lake.

A bike adventure for bikers with a head for heights and a good head for heights

Tour ridden on July 14 with a slightly different route...
From the Siflser Joch (start approx. 08:30) down to the Pass Umbrail, then up to the Bocchetta di Forcola, on to the Punta di Rims and from there over the ridge to the Piz Umbrail (only for bikers who are sure-footed and have a head for heights!).
We overtook a group of about eight hikers on the ascent to Bocchetta di Forcola, otherwise we only met a few bikers. After that, we were on our own until the very end, when we met a few hikers on Piz Umbrail.

The descent as well as the ascent is magnificent, but please only experienced bikers, both for the descent and the ascent!

A wonderful tour that offers almost everything and - at least for me - is also long enough (there is still time for a swim in the afternoon).
In the upper part, you need an extremely sensitive braking finger due to the dryness and lots of dust. But you don't have to get wet, even if it slips. The slopes are not extremely exposed. Otherwise, everything is very smooth to ride. On the uphill, you should perhaps bear in mind that the key section in the upper part alone is a huge gnar and will get your pulse racing for a few minutes.

Very alpine super tour. The upper part is quite washed out due to a storm but still rideable. On the ascent you should be sure-footed and good on your feet. Cool super tour.

A tour of superlatives:-)

We took this epic tour from Sta. Maria today. It's not usually possible this early in the year because of the snow. But there was no snow at all and the conditions were brilliant.
Here is the tour in full length: https://www.relive.cc/view/vdORMVEoNrv
The ascent was partly like walking on ball bearings - 1m forward, half a meter back because it was so slippery. But the view and the epic descent were worth the effort 1000-fold.

I rode the tour in summer 2021. There is now a summit cross on Piz Umbrail. I can only recommend the tour. A gem of the Alps in terms of scenery and biking. Definitely try it out! https://youtu.be/SNNKnb1bx54

Was up there on Piz Umbrail on Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2020. The ascent is easy up to the last 100 meters of altitude. With enough power in your calves, you could still ride quite a bit (I don't have the strength). The descent is as sharp as a Cobra's canine tooth. I only stopped briefly once or twice to reposition the film camera. Otherwise I sped down like crazy in a trance. When I stopped in Sta. Maria and happened to look down at the ground, I could see the adrenaline dripping out of my ears...

Did the tour with Mic and Gidi on 21.9. in the best weather conditions, including the ascent to the Umbrail Pass.
As the previous colleagues have already described, the ascent from the pass, or from about 2800m above sea level, should not be underestimated.
There was some snow at the top, good surefootedness helps ;-)
Highly recommended and impressive tour with a fantastic panorama!

Rode the tour today. Wonderful despite yesterday's thunderstorm. However, I would add to the tour description that the ascent is only recommended for experienced bikers. The ascent to Piz Umbrail is not without its difficulties and in my opinion not or almost not feasible with e-bikes.

Hello, how is the snow situation on Piz Umbrail. Is it possible with the bike.
VG Roland

How long are the difficult sections? I would like to do the route with my father who has an e-bike. Would it be possible to carry my bike to the front first and then ride it with him or is this a long way?

In reply to by misciasimon_44020

I wouldn't carry an e-bike up there. The last 100 meters are strenuous and you will notice the altitude.

Found a pair of sunglasses today (15.7.18) below Piz Umbrail.

We were out and about in Val Müstair last year at the end of July 2017 and there was no more snow on the Umbrail. I wouldn't recommend the route with an ebike as you have to hold the bike in one hand on the rock steps and hold the safety chain on the rock with the other hand. Otherwise it's a great tour. The landlord of the Hotel Alpina in Sta. Maria rode us to the Stelvio Pass at 07.00 in the morning. We then did the Tibet Trail and organized the shuttle bus in Prad at 13.00 (approx. 40 eur. / person). The shuttle took us back up to the Umbrail Pass and we were able to do the Piz Umbrail tour. However, two tours in one day sap your strength;-)

Tour ridden on 2.7.17 from 2800 m to the summit and from the summit to about 2700 m still a lot of snow. Partly knee deep. Better to wait another 2 weeks
I met 2 e-bikers on the ascent. They started the way back before the rock steps (secured with chains). E-bikes too heavy to shoulder. Otherwise a great tour. Beautiful lake. Extend the trail: doss radönt-val mora-vall gallo- jufplaun-buffalora.ca 50-55km
