San Romerio - Tirano

San Romerio (Poschiavo)

The San Romerio church is located on a rocky outcrop and can be seen from afar from the valley floor of Poschiavo. It has now also made a name for itself as an extremely attractive destination for mountain bikers.

Description

The tour begins with the long ascent from Poschiavo via Cologna and Balegna to Alp Sclupetoir, 900 meters above the valley floor. The ascent is easy, as it rides along well-maintained mountain and alpine roads. A little after Alp Sclupetoir, the road turns into a single trail, which initially descends slightly, but then climbs again slightly at the end to San Romerio. However, it is easy to ride. If you don't take a break in San Romerio, it's your own fault. Firstly because of the phenomenal scenery and secondly because of the rustic mountain inn. After San Romerio, the route follows the mountain road to Stablino for a while, but then switches back to a singletrail and - with the exception of a short counter-climb - rides downhill to the national border a little after the hamlet of Palü. You now follow the hiking trail markings to Roncaiola and finally reach Tirano through the vineyards.

Tip: The last train with permitted bike transport leaves Tirano for Poschiavo at 5.40 pm

Unfortunately, I didn't find the tour great at all, even with the new route guidance. The trails before Stablina are consistently beautiful and easy to ride. After that it becomes very borderline. The trail to Palü starts with an endless slope crossing with a lot of pushing. Then it is very steep, narrow and exposed down to Palü. If you love your life, you better push here too.

The route then continues along an old, no longer maintained path. Due to the thorny branches that hang over the trail again and again, progress here is slow and cautious. Incidentally, I also startled a snake here.

The few flowing passages are repeatedly interrupted by tough S3-S4 sections, and as you are mostly on dry stone walls, the whole thing is sometimes quite exposed. Unfortunately, you can't always see this due to the heavy bush encroachment.

In my opinion, these were not great single trails to Tirano, but quite a cramp and unsuitable for mountain biking.

We rode the tour on 08.06.25. It is absolutely worthwhile and has a high proportion of singletrail. From Palü (point 1300), the route is overgrown with bushes for about 500m (including nettles and thorny bushes 😩). But otherwise everything is tiptop. Ride on😎

I rode the tour on 5.7.2023. The described downhill trails were practically not maintained and very overgrown and one section was rather to be rated with riding technique 5 or in my eyes not really suitable. Furthermore, you ride downhill a lot on gravel roads and the bumpy mule tracks at the end down to Tirano are technically easy but boring. All in all, I don't think the tour is worthwhile at all - especially because there are so many really great tours with brilliant trails in the region!

I have updated the tour, the descent from the Swiss border to Tirano (except for the very last stretch) rides almost exclusively on great single trails.
