Sparrhorn

Sparrhorn

The 3020-metre-high Sparrhorn towers high above Brig and the foothills of the Aletsch Glacier. The summit region is very challenging on a mountain bike, but this is followed by an epic descent down to the town center of Brig.

Description

The tour starts on the Belalp, which can be reached from Brig initially by post bus and then by cable car. You sit in the saddle for a short stretch at the start, but then you have to push your bike up to the top station of the chairlift. From there, the bike rests on your shoulders and you climb up a steep, stony but easily accessible path to the Sparrhorn summit with fantastic views of the Aletsch region and the glacier peaks opposite, including the Matterhorn. The descent then follows the ascent route to the Tyndalldenkmal. The section from the summit to the top station of the chairlift is extremely difficult and dangerous to ride in places. After that, however, it becomes extremely fun. From the monument, you head down to the hotel and from there via Eggen to the village of Blatten. The descent also has some challenging sections. The final section from Blatten back to Brig is then much easier and faster and leads directly to the center of Naters, the neighboring village of Brig, via an old goods road.

Notes:

  • The Sparrhorn is very popular with pedestrians who ride up on the chairlift and then hike the last section to the summit. Mountain bikers are strongly advised not to tackle this tour on a weekend or during the high season.
  • If you are on an e-mountain bike, you can make the ascent to the chairlift mountain station on a cart path, but then leave the bike at the crossroads below the Sparrhorn and tackle the summit on foot

Belalp-Tyndall-Blatten (shortened tour 1h):
From Belalp approx. 250 m up to the Tyndall monument. Great view!
Flowing descent to Blatten (cable car valley station) with a few crisp S3 passages.

Made the 2nd time. If you ride over Bitschji and Hegdorn towards the Bitsch suspension bridge, you can extend the trail. More singletrail but exposed sections. Definitely better than towards Naters.

Beautiful tour, definitely worth it. However, it is advisable to wait until the chairlift has finished for the season, then there are hardly any more hikers. The last 150 m before the summit, the bike can theoretically be deposited. This part is technically very difficult and often exposed. However, the next trail up to the Tyndalldenkmal is first class and completely rideable. The section to Blatten is also great, but the last part to Naters is a little less so.

My highlight this season. An endless mega trail. Anyone with advanced riding technique should definitely ride it. Only 5 hikers encountered, down to Belalb, despite vacations and beautiful weather.
