Stockalperweg
Description
In the early morning, take the PostBus to the Simplon Pass and start the tour here. Always follow the signposted Stockalper route in the direction of Simplon Dorf and Gondo. The path leads over single trails throughout, is nice to ride and varied. Shortly before Gondo, the trail leads through an old military tunnel. At the border village of Gondo, you board the post bus again and ride back to the Simplon Pass. Here you enter the second part, the descent back to Brig. The path towards Tafernabach is rough, technical and interspersed with tight hairpin bends in the upper section. Further down, it becomes smoother and smoother until you start the counter-climb to the pass road in Grund. Once you reach it, follow the old road for a few meters and then take the world-class single trail high above the Saltina Gorge to Brei and on to Brig.

I did the tour on 7.11.2025. I just think it's a great tour. Towards Gondo I thought it was going to be a bit boring but then came the bunker and I found it fascinating to ride through the mountain for so long.
From the pass towards Brig at km 30.7, the original route was closed and I rode or pushed up about 200 meters. At the top you don't have to ride a single meter on the pass road, there is a hiking trail. I then rode the last part (from km 12.6) as on the https://www.ride-mtb.com/de/touren/maederlicke tour. I think it's a great alternative, the forest section is not very technical, more flowy but still has a few hairpin bends.
Due to a landslide, the path on the north side of the Simplon towards Brig is closed. There is a detour. But it's a lot longer and you have to get back onto the pass road first. The trail was cool and flowy, but we got lost and later had to crank back up to the pass road. What a shame! Somehow you get back to Brig though.
Rode on November 10. Good conditions, tolerant Postbus drivers (no bike hooks from November (ski racks)).
From Mittubäch, as already described, an ascent is necessary, but the trail from Ganterwald is great.
Think closed route will stay longer.
But even so, as always the Stockalperweg is worth an experience.
Does anyone know anything about the current condition of the trail? (Regarding the heavy rainfall in June 24)
Yes, the Stockalperweg from the Simplon Pass to Brig is closed from Mittubäch to Grund due to debris flows in the Bachtschugge area. There are signs below the Simplon Pass, so the only option is to climb up into the Ganterwald forest ....
Very nice tour, rode it last week. Was quickly dry again in the wind after the rain. I personally like the descent to Gondo better, but the upper part to Brig is technically interesting.
@stobler_61033 There is a big construction site in the Gondo gorge. Don't know if it was more interesting on the gallery before, it's now a wide path. But otherwise nothing like that.
Does anyone know what the situation will be in 2023? I have "heard" that unfortunately some of the excavator has been leveled so that everyone can ride - but I don't know if this is true and which/how many sections are affected and whether it is still worthwhile at all. Thank you for any relevant information.
Interesting tour - scenic and historical! Mostly flowing, with occasional crisp sections where you have to descend briefly. On the side to Brig (second trail) there are many narrow bridges where the handlebars just don't fit through. Nevertheless, the scenery is worth it. I would rate the tour much easier on average than 4/6.
Today I was able to ride the tour in very hot weather. A really beautiful trail. Varied terrain. The panorama in the mountains - great! I personally think the technical rating of four is too high. From my point of view, it would be more of a three.
Once I arrived in Gondo, I made a short detour to the Zwischenbergenschlucht gorge and pushed through the few meters in altitude. Google Plus code 54RR+R7 Zwischbergen. Beautiful waterfalls with crystal blue pools. If you ride a little higher, the natural pools are also accessible on foot, invite you to take a dip and are a great way to cool off.
Tried the following successfully in Aug. 2020: A great alternative for the lower part of the Stockalpler is to turn left after "Mittubäch" at point 1248 into the beautiful Nessultal. Up to "Unner Nessultal", cross the stream and up to the ground forest and point 1466. Uniquely beautiful, but only for confident bikers without fear of heights! Follow the Suone "Bärgeri" to the "Wurzukäppeli" and point 1271. Here take the hiking trail down in the direction of the fall (not the Strässen).
I rode it yesterday 9.10.20. Absolutely awesome... I was afraid of snow or wetness from the previous days; but it wasn't true; beautiful with the most beautiful fall rides... in the last part towards Brig there is a detour signposted wecken Steinfall, but it can be used very well and you automatically get back on the good road. Happy trail
I did the second part (from the Simplon Pass to Brig). However, with the following highly recommended modification:
Descent from the Simplon Pass - flowy - but at point 1531 turn right up via point 1598 and continue up the tarred road to the pass road. At Ganterwald turn into the trail which ends under the Ganter bridge. Very flowy!!!
Then down the gravel road to point 1117 and up the tarred road towards Schallberg. Then at the pass road take the tarred road towards Rosswald and shortly after at point 1401 turn into the trail to Brig. Highly recommended!
Nice alternative! This descent from Ganterwald corresponds to the final section of the Mäderlicke tour - for those who are looking for a track for this section.
ok, thanks. But how do I find points 1531, 1598 etc.? From this description I can't see exactly where to leave the Stockalper and pick up the Mäderlicke Trail.
A dream tour! The scenery and the trails are simply superb! From flowy and easy to blocked and challenging, everything is included. A must if you are in Brig. Carrying or pushing is part of it and shouldn't be a problem. On the descent to Brig, you can ride via the Nesseltal, which in my opinion is more beautiful. Take enough time to see the countryside and villages.
Did the route from Simplon to Gondo on Saturday, July 25th at lunchtime. Overtook about 20 hikers. No problems at all. Absolutely awesome trail!

We rode the tour last fall, we inquired about the reservation, we were told at Brig station that would not be necessary, in Gondo we had to wait a long time, we were only 4 people for a long time and thought that would fit...... there were more and more, in the end there were about 20 people, the bus driver asked about the reservation, I told him the whole....just shaking my head, not because of us.
The tour is fun, no hikers in the morning, only the grid stairs are not so great otherwise everything is rideable with a few exceptions (for me)
In principle, reservations for the Postbus are compulsory. I was taken along anyway because there was still enough space. The descent to Gondo takes around 2 hours if you take your time and take a photo here and there. Be sure to check the departure times from Gondo, as the post bus doesn't ride frequently. I therefore decided to drive up myself. The pass road itself is pleasantly flat, but long (19 km, 1,200 m difference in altitude), although there is plenty of traffic and lots of galleries. It's best to plan the tour in advance.
Checked 2018
I give it 5 stars!!! Top tour!!!
Here is an insight into the tour from the last Herbst✌️

Did the tour twice this summer. Postbus Brig Simpon - trail down to Gondo - Postbus Gondo Simplon - trail down to Brig. (Postbus reservation mandatory!) What can I say....An ideal tour to slowly grow into trail history. A great tour in terms of scenery and history. I think the trail to Gondo is only OK as far as Fort Gondo. Well, not much more than OK. After the castle .... Well. Lots of pushing, boring and shady sections. I personally like the descent to Brig better. Why? Flowier.... There is a touch of Mediterranean feeling. Leave the original route after about 20 minutes...a small climb that is worth it though. In contrast to the blocked original route, super flowy and with great turns. If you want the route via gps just let me know.
hey yves
thanks for your report! can you send me your route?
greetings paul
Hi Yves,
how long does it take from the Simplon Pass down to Gondo if you ride at a relaxed pace and also make a few photo stops?
Can you please send me your customized tour in GPX format? Thank you in advance.
Greetings Daniel

Hello yves
Your tour change sounds good and I plan to do the same. Many thanks for sending your GPS data to: heeb.rainer@gmail.com.
Wishing all bikers a great summer 2022
Especially on weekends in July and August, it is highly recommended to book/register your bike with PostBus.

Super tour, the descent to Gondo is more scenic than the one to Brig. We have made a video: https://youtu.be/8QXwdZZX14Y
Hello Marco
Would you have the GPS data for your tour? The video is very promising, so I would like to do the tour =). How long did you have for the tour?
Hello together
Would like to do the tour on Good Friday? Can anyone give me information about the snow ratio? Or is it more likely to be scoured? Merci in advance
Was on the Stockalperweg yesterday 17.09.2016. Rode the bus from Brig to the Simplon Pass. Important to make a reservation for the bikes. But we didn't have the others. The staff of the bus company is very nice and helpful. Thanks to these people.
Arrived on the pass we started towards Gondo. Super trail in great condition. It is important that it is dry. There are one or two passages that can be very tricky when the stones are wet. It is a pity that the passages on the bridges are so narrow. Beware of the risk of getting stuck with the handlebars :-).
Great trail in the forest up to the fortress. The passage through the fortress was illuminated. Very impressive and adventurous.
After passing through the fortress it gets very technical. Steep passages and large stones on the way. If you have the courage and the right bike, you can ride the trail.
On the final trail to Gondo, you are rewarded with a wonderful panorama. And the great high walls on the left-hand side will make any climber's heart beat faster.
The bus ride back to the pass from Gondo leaves at 1.17 pm on the dot. (Please note that a reservation is also necessary here)
Departure from the pass in the direction of Brig. The trail is very demanding, again be careful, very "dangerous" in wet conditions. Riders need to know what they are capable of. Otherwise, pushing is the order of the day.
There are many passages where you have to dismount and cross various wooden bridges.
Unfortunately, the path here leads into a depression, so you have to ride up another 300 meters of altitude on the road or carry your bike on the hiking trail. (Point 1071 Chilchnüowand)
One of the most beautiful sections, if not the most beautiful, followed through the Gfallten forest. Super views to Brig and a flowing trail with great drops.
Arrived in Brig...a great day.
GPS data is also available at http://www.gps-tracks.com/stockalperweg-mountainbike-tour-000811.html.
Only rode the 2nd part from Simplon to Brig in the morning in July. For us average bikers with average courage, the trail was largely unrideable in the first half (i.e. up to the intermediate climb). We were simply afraid that we would get stuck on the many stones / blocks / medieval pavements that were slightly damp from the morning dew - you rarely or never fall softly. Often the degree of blockage simply exceeded our riding ability. Conclusion: Only fun for experts who can control their bikes even with a high degree of blockage and have full protection with them.
I've been finding it very difficult for years to agree with the RIDE/SWISS SINGLETRAIL MAP difficulty ratings (blue, red and black) for tours described "at all" and can't do anything with them. They are highly open to interpretation.
I find it easier to warm to the information provided by http://www.supertrail-map.com, although here too it is important to check whether the description and information on difficulty levels are equally understandable for everyone and cannot be interpreted (regardless of your own ability).
I like the information from http://www.singletrail-skala.de best, which I and many colleagues find clearly understandable. In my opinion, this information should be used as international guidelines for web site platforms such as this one from RIDE. Just as there are for hikers and mountaineers.
However, I am aware that RIDE/ SWISS SINGLETRAIL MAP wants to remain independent and is building its own kingdom. I classify RIDE as one of the mainstream bike media like BIKE and MOUNTAINBIKE etc., which only follow a commercial philosophy without any ethics.
Please don't get me wrong - I think selling a product and/or service is absolutely ok, but it should be offered transparently and above all not open to interpretation.
I also can't understand why you have to buy a silver or gold subscription on this platform to get GPX data for tours. With a little patience, you can find very well-maintained websites on which tour data is made available to you.
We rode the tour from the pass to Gondo today and were disappointed by the section in the Gondo Gorge. We understand "good riding" (according to the tour description) to mean something else.
If you take the beautiful, linked movie as a template for the tour, you should already take the PostAuto in Simplon Dorf. There are probably no shots of the gorge - apart from the fantastic fortifications. Otherwise you would have seen that obstacles often force the average rider to dismount, the passage after the fortress is unrideable and the bike has to be carried up and down a metal staircase from time to time. The whole thing takes place right next to or on the highway. We wouldn't do that to ourselves a second time.
...today the route was probably in better shape; two or three stairs up and about the same number of short descents (although I'm sure that pretty much everything would be rideable if it were) remain the side note of a great first half of the Simplon tour. My girlfriend - she's riding for the second season - enjoyed it anyway, especially down to Brig, where there were one or two tricky sections. Thanks ride.ch for the great tip and the appropriate rating (4/5 for a few places), which is known to be more meaningful than drone shots and certain self-assessments.

Hello
How can I map the tour on the Swiss Topo App? When I select this option, a white screen appears. Thank you for your feedback.

Hello folks
Did the tour today with bike friends. Start at 09:18 in Brig by bus, make sure you book! Arrival at Simplon Hospiz, then downhill to Gondo. It's a great trail to Gondo, some passages for running. The 13:17 bus would have been enough for us, but unfortunately we hadn't made a reservation. Here, too, it is essential to make a reservation, as the bus no longer has a trailer. We caught the 14:17 bus and had space on the rear carrier. 3 people had not reserved, but they were also able to travel with us, bikes stowed in the bus. The bus staff are very friendly and helpful! Back on the Simplon Pass, we made the descent to Brig. This part of the Stockalperweg is very technical at the start. From our point of view, the descent to Gondo is worlds better.
rode today ( 7.7.16 ) few hikers on the trail. everything is wonderfully dry. if it's wet i wouldn't ride the trail. then the stones on the trail become a super slide. ah yes. hammertour hammertag
have fun
I have a Silver subscription, but still can't find any GPS tracks in the tour descriptions.
Hi, I think you can download the GPS track on the Map/Track page, under the Google Map.
Hello
I can't find the GPS data for the tour anywhere. Where are they hidden?
You need a Ride-Subscription to download the GPS data
We rode the tour last week (end of June). All in all a great tour! Thanks for the suggestion. The paths are in top condition, there were still very few hikers on the trail. One thing that might be in short supply is the bike rack spaces at the Postbus. There are 5 spaces on the rack, so one or two bikes could be taken on the Postbus.
Please also note the Postbus timetable. The first Postbus from Gondo rides at 13:17, so if you start in Brig with the 9.18, you can take some time for breaks and the Fort Gondo.
Do you need a headlamp for Fort Gondo?
No, no headlamp necessary.
