Surenenpass

Surenenpass

The Surenen Pass between Engelberg and Altdorf is a historic crossing in Central Switzerland. The route belongs in the portfolio of every good mountain biker.

Description

From Engelberg, follow the little road to the Fürenalpbahn. If there are too many people here, you can take the gondola lift to Usser Äbnet a little higher up. The actual ascent begins later at the chapel on Blackenalp. A single trail rides to the Surenen Pass 500 meters further up. Trained mountain bikers manage the entire ascent by riding, but most get off their bikes from time to time.

Once the Surenen Pass is reached, one of the longest descents in Central Switzerland begins. There are 1830 vertical meters between the top of the pass and Lake Lucerne. However, the single trail to Waldnacht requires good riding technique. Later, after a mountain lake, you cross the uppermost section of the Bockitobel - there is a danger of falling here! However, the trickiest sections are quickly overcome, then the singletrail fireworks continue to Zieriberg and finally to Hofstetten on the outskirts of Erstfeld. Here you can either take the train for the return journey or ride along the Reuss to Flüelen on the shores of Lake Lucerne.

Tip: Start the tour in Lucerne or Zurich, then take the train to Engelberg. From Erstfeld or Flüelen, you can also take the train back to the starting point after the tour.

Be careful at the Alp Eifrutt to Gletti, the cable of the transport train is partly lying on the trail or is stretched over the trail.

The section between Restibiel and Eyfrutt is unfortunately quite eroded on a short stretch and the descent without dismounting is reserved for very experienced bikers. Otherwise great as always. The tour is very worthwhile after the alpine season, as there are no more fences in the way.

Did this tour on Friday, 23.08.2024. Great scenic ascent, but very strenuous. I had to push at the end. I was only able to start the descent at 15:00. But then the trail was practically deserted all the way down. No more snowfields either. The trail has eroded further at 1900m, which doesn't make it any easier to ride. Nevertheless, a great experience. I just about managed to catch the boat from Fluelen at 17:00. What a day.

Top tour! In the second part of the ascent we had to push the bike most of the time, it was too steep for us. You might be able to ride more with a motor. The descent is crisp but very varied, both in terms of trail conditions and scenery.
Please note that the cable car to Fürenalp only transports bikes until 9:30 a.m. Unfortunately, we arrived too late at the Fürenalp cable car. The woman at the ticket office told us very firmly that we were too late and that there would certainly be no exceptions - even if there were only a few people waiting for the next descent. So we rode to the back lane, which took quite a while. At least it was worth it: the lift transports bikes all day and friendly staff also work there.

According to the current entry on the Fürenalpbahn website, bikes are only transported until 09:30 and after 16:00. We were at the cable car today at around 10:30 and spontaneously asked if transportation was possible. We were lucky and were able to attach the bikes on the outside and take the train up. We learned that transportation outside of the published times apparently depends on the staff on duty.
A great and varied tour awaited us, with crisp climbs and challenging passages on the way down to Uri. Compared to a few years ago, I had the impression that the first part of the trail, right at the start of the descent, had been prepared. Accordingly, I no longer found the first few hundred meters as challenging as a few years ago. This in no way detracts from the overall experience and I can only recommend the tour to anyone with good MTB technique who feels comfortable in S3 terrain with crisp hairpin bends, blocked terrain and sometimes loose, coarse gravel.

Awesome tour! 1800 Elevation loss throughout, beautifully technical and scenic. At the moment there are still large snowfields on the upper 300 meters of the descent, so I would certainly wait another 2 weeks (but the tour is of course already worthwhile). The ascent is also a dream, if you're strong you can do it with just a few descents

Biking at its best! Wonderful! The last part of the ascent is tough, but every meter is worth it. The descent is technically and physically demanding and really awesome! The scree fields described in the comments are currently very rideable. Any time again and again. Tip for the return trip: a (steam) boat trip from Flüelen is a worthy way to round off the tour!

We rode over the pass on 24.7. We really enjoyed the tour and were able to work on our technique. The paths were free of snow and in top condition! It took us about 2 hours from Fürenalp to the pass, including breaks, and we had to push the bikes for just under 1 hour. But the effort is worth it!
The descent is very demanding, you have to be able to ride S3 trails well and with pleasure. The first few meters from the Surenen Pass already set the pace. If you don't feel comfortable here, you should turn around straight away. The descent towards Engelberg is much easier.

I'm not one of the good riders and so I never do the route from the Surenen Pass down to Erstfeld. If I did, I would certainly be one of those who would have pushed the bike up to Waldnacht. But there are many bikers at my level and I want to show them that the Surenenpass route from Engelberg up to the top of the pass and back is also fantastic. There are only several sections in the last 300 meters of altitude where I have to push the bike uphill, but can ride most of the way down. The tour starting in Grafenort and through the Aaschlucht gorge to Engelberg is particularly beautiful.

I made a video of this tour, which I like to show to less technically skilled bikers and which shows the beauty and feasibility of this tour quite well. The video is also good for indoor cycling when it's cold and wet outside. The video is on YouTube: https://youtu.be/Mv8eSRy-Apk

Very beautiful and challenging tour. With the exception of the scree slope, the descent is consistently rideable for good skiers. There are no more snowfields. However, the tour is obviously often underestimated, as we saw many bikers pushing their bikes up to Waldnacht. From Waldnacht onwards it becomes easier, even if it is a little slippery in the forest in places. All in all, it was a great tour that pushed us to our technical limits and decorated our bikes with lots of cow pats.

Wow Hammer Tour - wonderful nature experience.......but technically not to be underestimated. And on the way to the Surenenpass you have to hike quite a bit by bike.

The one who rides everything from Surenenpass to Waldnacht (big snowfields, scree slopes, etc.) is the one I want to meet.

The ascent between Stäfeli and Blackenalp is now all rideable - a road has been built.

Change sides of the valley at Stäfeli to reach the new road. This is not yet shown on the maps.

Exactly - at Stäfeli turn right in the direction of the Spannorthütte hiking trail, then you can comfortably ride up everything.
