Wildspitz-Cross

The Wildspitz with its mountain restaurant is one of the best-known destinations for mountain bikers in Central Switzerland. The approach from Zug and the subsequent descent to Goldau is a challenging but frequently used route.

Description

The tour over the Wildspitz starts in Zug with the ascent to the Zugerberg, which rides along the little road past the chapel of St. Verena and the hamlet of Sennhütte near the mountain station of the funicular. The first ascent can be bypassed quickly and easily. Follow the country lanes over the Zugerberg to Buschenchäppeli and finally take a forest road to Urzlenboden. This is a very steep ascent, where fit riders can get through without any problems, but less trained riders may have a short walk. Once you've reached the top, it's only a short walk to the Wildspitz summit restaurant. The view up here is fantastic, and if you turn down a break in the mountain restaurant, you will miss an important part of the Wildspitz tour. The descent finally starts on the Gnipen, the summit to the west of the Wildspitz. The rough trail, which has also been hit by many a cow, rides along the ridge until you reach the Ober Spitzbüel. Here you branch off to the right into the Härzigwald forest and ride through it all the way to Goldau. You can return to Zug either by train or on the lakeside road along Lake Zug.

I rode the descent early this morning; the trails were in good condition. I was able to ride my e-bike on the rear wheel and navigate the barriers while standing or coasting without any problems. I’d definitely do the ride again. The hikers I passed were all friendly and thought it was exciting that you could ride down there.

I rode the tour yesterday. A bit too much asphalt on the approach for my taste. In the upper part of the ascent to Wildspitz still quite a bit of snow = pushing...
But it was definitely worth it for the descent down to Goldau.

Tour done today-glorious! A tough climb, but definitely rideable for strong bikers. There were still 3x10m snowfields where you have to push. The descent was beautiful and technical throughout. Still a bit damp and muddy in places.

Tastes are different... I found the trail really cool! Anyone who likes technical and steep trails will be happy here. Sure, the cow barriers are a bit tedious, but that's just part of nature trails. It's best to ride the tour a little later, I was on the Gnipen summit at half past six at the beginning of June and the sun was reflected in Lake Zug - it's magical. The return trip along the lake in the evening sun is also wonderful. The ascent is crisp, especially the part between 1,200 and 1,400 - respect to those who can ride it!

I rode my Wildspitz Tour with the e-mtb from Zug up to Zugerberg, down to Ägerisee, along the lake to Morgarten, from there a few kilometers on the main road to Sattel, then up the Sunnenberg to the Wildspitz Restaurant with the great view. I rode down on the north side, first on an interesting singletrail to Urzlen and the forest path to Walchwilerberg and down on the small main road to Lake Zug and along it to Zug. It was a very enjoyable tour, which I also recorded on video and uploaded to YouTube. The link to this video is:

The tour is marked on the following map: https://map.schweizmobil.ch/?lang=de&bgLayer=pk&logo=yes&season=summer&…

What is not marked on the map, but visible in the video: On the Zugerberg I made a little detour down the great flow trail, which is also very enjoyable.

I rode the tour in October 2020. The ascent is feasible due to the renewal of the path in the saddle. Still relatively steep.
On the descent I probably turned right too early (at Ochsenboden), in the direction of Bigstein/Arth. This is followed by a technical descent which then has a bike ban further down, so this should be avoided.
The tour should also be avoided in wet conditions, as it is very muddy in the upper part and this damages the hiking trail
Even in October, there are still around 3 to 4 barbed wires installed, which cannot be bypassed.

Did the tour at the beginning of September 2020. Very eventful tour with strenuous ascent and stunning panorama. Very steep from Urzlen - had to push. The descent is also steep/technical and towards the end in the forest there is a bit of speed.

However, I would definitely NOT recommend the tour for e-mountain bikes, as (as others have already mentioned) the bike had to be lifted about 10 times over the very narrow pasture passages.

I rode the tour on Sunday. The joy of the descent was limited. 11 pasture crossings, with barbed wire to the left and right, reduced the fun. The crossings are the classic wooden triangles. Some of them are so narrow that it is almost impossible to get through. I assume that as soon as the cows have gone, the fences will be removed.

P.S. And you have to pay in cash at the mountain inn. Maps are not accepted.

The ascent via Urzlenboden is no longer interesting, as the gravel is completely new.
