Carbon-Trail

Singletrail Locarnese

The Carbon Trail is the name given to the descent from Alpe di Neggia to Magadino. A classic single trail in Ticino that has now been upgraded to a fun flow trail especially for mountain bikers.

Description

The ascent to the start of the trail is less spectacular but more strenuous: from Vira, the mountain road climbs 1200 meters in countless bends to Alpe dei Neggia. Road cyclists often use this pass as a training route. For us, it is the access to the trail that starts right at the top of the pass. The hiking trail has been cleaned up so that it is great for mountain bikers to ride, but has retained the character of an original trail. The result is an extremely fun trail. The first section rides up to a stream, then you have to push your bike up a few meters. Well-trained riders can also master this ascent by riding. At Alpe di Trecciura it's done, the rest of the route is pure downhill fun. The entire route is signposted as an official mountain bike route (398 Alpe di Neggia). At Corognola, turn right and roll the last few meters down to Magadino.

We rode the tour today, great trail in very good condition!

The track will not be open to bikers again until June 2025, which means that you currently have to pedal from the bottom to the top. We rode on October 4, 2024, and the conditions are excellent. There are no refreshment stops along the route, but there are always watercourses where you can refill your bottle. The "Carbon Trail" is in excellent condition - although it is no longer maintained, it is very rideable. However, advanced riding skills are required. The tour is also doable when the top few meters are covered in snow, but then it can become a real feat of strength and is only recommended for those who like such challenges!

Restaurant on the Alpe Neggia is closed / for sale and the store has a lunch break from 12-13. Trail in good condition and also fun with an e-bike.

we rode the trail yesterday. the trail entrance is just below the snow line, so perfect, even if it is cold and a bit windy. there is a lot of foliage in the lower part, which limits you a bit, but otherwise it was a great adventure with stream crossings, flowing passages, even more difficult sections and uphill trails. the view is also worth it. for insecure riders, make sure you allow enough time.

I had to smile when I read the description of this tour. Carbon Trail is legendary, always good.

Unfortunately, the upper section of the Carbon Trail is in poor condition. The trail is also no longer marketed and maintained by the region as there have been objections from owners. In addition, the heavy rainfall at the end of August 2023 contributed to the damage.

drove up from Vairano today at 36 degrees Celsius. For the fourth time in the last 5 years. I knew that the climb would be pretty boring. But in these temperatures it was brutal. I was at the top in 1h 45min. and had more than 15 min. longer than other years. To my horror, the restaurant was also closed. Luckily, the cheese maker just below had a carrot cake and an iced tea on offer. My salvation! The trail was actually in the usual (i.e. good) condition. Nevertheless, I was scared by the steep side slopes at the start of the downhill. Life-threatening if you lose your balance or the front wheel slips...didn't you think so? There were still leaves and some places were wet. I stopped at the latest at the hairpin bends to reassess the situation. Then it happened before the river crossing. I fell over the scree. I was very lucky and got away with a few bruises. My recommendation: make sure you take good knee and elbow pads with you. I was stupid and probably only remembered the lower part. It was - as always - a pleasure and, in my opinion, risk-free. But the beginning should not be underestimated in my opinion.

I was on the carbon trail yesterday and today. A bit wetter than before, but still a pleasure. I'll be back....

I rode the tour on 22.04.23. The climb is tough, but worth it. Unfortunately, the restaurant on the pass was still closed for the winter. The trail fits perfectly with 3/6, in the upper part there was some snow and further down 3-4 times a tree/large branch in the way. The one stream before the ascent is currently carrying a lot of water. Cool tour, thanks👍

I also rode the trail on March 25th and didn't think it was too bad. The foliage is almost part and parcel of the area in winter and on the DH it only gets in the way in the very blocky sections. Either leaves or dust, there's always something... ;-) I had to get off the bike a few times, but everything was fine. The leaves were only annoying on the way up, almost everything would have been rideable but the rear wheel kept slipping on the dry leaves. Nice trail with a great panorama where you can find even better conditions a little later in the year.

After having the best conditions on the trails in the Isone and Malcantone area on the two previous days (contrary to expectations at the end of March, there was hardly any foliage on the trails or already compacted, everything was clearly visible and rideable), I was bitterly disappointed on the carbon trail. The first part up to the stream crossing was still halfway okay, and what I couldn't ride because of too much foliage I used for trail maintenance. After Alpe di Trecciura and up to Alp Monti di Vira, there was a lot of beech foliage in places. Riding was out of the question in many places, especially as a fall could have fatal consequences in some places. Where I usually think "... and rolls and rolls and rolls...", this time it was a case of hiking and pushing the bike. Not only can you not see the ground, but the dry beech leaves are also very slippery. This section would probably have been more fun with a leaf rake and on foot. In the chestnut forests that followed Monti di Vira, the trails were in excellent condition again and everything was rideable.

Rode it 2 years ago and again today. For me, this is one of the most beautiful trails in Ticino. With the e-bike, the ascent is also pure riding fun - the only thing that forces you to descend (and carry your bike over without any problems) is a tree that has fallen over. The trail is in top condition, dry as a fart. Take care of the trail - a pearl above Lake Maggiore!

I rode the trail today and will do it again tomorrow. I didn't ride up myself, but took the Postbus. I didn't meet any other bikers on the trail.

The trail is in very good condition and not difficult compared to other single trails in the area. Despite the lack of maintenance, you can still tell that the original hiking trail has been modified for bikers.

What a trail! I've been looking from Tenero to Alpe di Neggia for 15 years and know about the trail, but yesterday I rode it for the first time. A year ago there was still talk of it being closed due to forestry work. This seems to have been completed: there were no branches or tree trunks on the entire 12 km trail, nor were there any temporary cable cars. Occasionally you get the feeling that a trail builder has ridden through the slope with a clinometer, with the idea of getting as many kilometers of trail out of the terrain as possible without having to pedal. He has succeeded in doing so, and at the bottom the trail spits you out as a serpentine specialist who can hardly keep the smile off your face.

We rode it on April 15, more challenging at the beginning, pure fun after the intermediate ascent. On the ascent, where you have to push anyway, there were trees you had to climb over. But we also met a few guys with chainsaws. At this point, many thanks to all those who maintain such trails for free in their free time. Grazie mille!

A lot of foliage on the trail in places (30-40cm). Basically, the section from Alpe di Neggia to Monti di Sopra is only recommended for very good bikers, steep, tight bends, sloping terrain. Trees block the way in places. From Monti di Sopra onwards, the trail is in great condition, flowing with technical sections. In terms of riding technique, the upper section is more likely to be classified as level 4, the lower section as level 3.

The carbon trail is still a beautiful and varied descent in Ticino that is well worth the effort!
Due to the dry and mild weather, the trail was almost free of snow on 3.3.22 - except for the first few meters.
The condition of the carbon trail has already been discussed several times on this platform. In my opinion, it is still in top condition and the trail is easy to ride throughout.
Now in spring, there are up to 40 cm of leaves in the slight dips in the trail in places. This limits the riding fun somewhat: dry beech leaves are very slippery and the larger branches and stones underneath are not recognizable as obstacles.
Perhaps other users would be interested in a trail maintenance week now in spring?

Trail ridden from Tamaro on June 5. As the foresters weren't working at the weekend and there were no cows or goats grazing on the pasture at the start, we were able to ride the whole trail. Awesome trail!

We visited the trail today. Unfortunately in very poor condition. There is a ban on driving in the middle of the forest due to logging. We then walked up over rock steps.

Not exactly a treat.

Went down the trail today. It is no longer part of Switzerland-Mobility. The trail is no longer maintained. There are a lot of leaves and loose stones on the trail at the moment. With a little caution, it's still good, but unfortunately it no longer has the flow feeling of the past. During the week, part of the trail is closed due to logging. At the weekend you can get through with a bit of skill, but with a bike in your hand. What a pity about this great trail. Fortunately, the trail is still perfect from Monti di Vira onwards!

I rode the tour yesterday, after a long ascent on the tarred road, a colleague called it the little Stilfserjoch ;-) we then hit the singletrail after a refreshment in the restaurant. The singletrail needs some attention from the trail builders, but most of it is still very flowy and easy to ride. There are a few technical passages, but on the whole the tour is a lot of fun. From about Monti di Vira the singletrail is built with wood, don't want to think how it would be to ride there when it's wet... Technically not demanding but probably like riding on soap...

Wow, this singletrail down is awesome! A few technical passages (easy to ride), otherwise lots of flow. A nice reward for the long climb (well, except for the e-bikers who overtook me on the way up but were in the way on the way down...). ;-) )

Please note: Forestry work is taking place in October and November 2018 and the trail is closed during working hours, except on weekends and public holidays. I stood at the top today and was a bit surprised.

At the end of the track, always follow the officially signposted MTB trail and not the GPS track, because this leads through narrow, asphalted neighborhood streets, which is not a pleasure for bikers or residents.

Is this GPS data so inaccurate, or does the track run as it is plotted?

Cool video, this downhill seems to be very flowy. I definitely have to ride it one day. Saluti da Ticino
