Fürhörnli

Fürhörnli (Chur)

The Fürhörnli stands high above Chur at the entrance to Schanfigg. The tour is not only worthwhile because of the magnificent view, the singletrail descent into the city center is first-class and can be ridden very early in the season thanks to the sunny location.

Description

The ascent initially follows the main road in the direction of Arosa as far as Maladers. Here you turn left and leave the car traffic by following the steep little road in the direction of Alp Bargis. Immediately before this alp, turn right onto an even steeper gravel road to the Maladerser Heuberge. If you think that was steep enough, you haven't reckoned with the final stretch. A small cart track leads from here to the hunting lodge directly below the Fürhörnli. The wide path here is so steep that it is a challenge even on foot. Eventually, however, you reach the ridge, 1300 meters above the town center, with the terrain dropping almost vertically into the Chur Rhine Valley. Up to now, the tour has led almost exclusively through the southern slopes of the Schanfigg, so the route is already skiable on the right early in the season, when skiing is still possible further up in Lenzerheide. For the descent, follow the first-class trail along the ridge. At a junction, don't turn right (the trail is very difficult and blocked) but continue straight on until the trail turns right and leads to the Mittenberg. The Mittenberg is probably the most popular after-work destination for mountain bikers in Chur, and the single trails now take you down to Chur. The trail ends directly in the city center.

Super tour with great trails. I recommend riding over the Mittelberg on the ascent from Chur to Maladers

Beautiful and rewarding tour with really great trails. Everything from flow to hairpin bends. The ascent at the beginning on the road towards Arosa tarnishes the overall picture of the tour somewhat.

Tour done today on 21.8.2023 - super cool! Mega view and yes, the path is steep:-) A tip - if you want to avoid the busy road towards Arosa, you can take the post bus from Chur to Maladers Dorf. Then uphill in the village you soon come to the ascent route. Saves almost 400m on the road

Very nice tour! You have to push for the last 200-300 m and even that is challenging because it's really steep. The trails are great to ride, not extremely difficult and, above all, never exposed.

beautiful tour, almost everything has already been mentioned in the comments......except that there is no more water for the uphill from Maladers.

Rode today. Completely snow-free and dry.

Made 21 tour today, August 13. The last third of the ascent was very steep and not at all fun (I'm in good shape). View awesome. Descent good, with a few tricky sections. But my wife didn't enjoy it at all. The tour is certainly not for beginners or the inexperienced.

The start was in Calfreisen. This saves a few meters in altitude!
From there it goes up to Balnettis and then into the Calfreisen ravine on somewhat narrow hiking trails.
After the two ravines, the route is still easy for a short while, but then it goes uphill with quite a gradient!
Well, I think it's better with an e-bike:-) Although the last ascent is not possible with it either, it throws you back from the bike, so steep! :-)
But at the top it's still flat and you have to walk the last few meters up to the Führhörnli.
The view is amazing! The Chur Rhine Valley as far as the Oberland and also down towards Walenstadt fills the eye. Super beautiful.
The descent on the trails to Mittenberg can be reached on normal steep, rooty paths. From Mittenberg onwards, there are trails designed for bikers.
A must-do!
The video gives you an impression of the tour........

Did the tour on 10.05.2021. In the upper part of the ascent there are still several snowfields that have to be crossed. In the steepest part of the final ascent, the ground is very soggy and muddy. It is difficult not to slip on the bike. On the whole, however, the trail is quite passable - apart from a few snowfields.

Thanks for the helpful tip. I read up on the tour and wondered whether it was already rideable on 13.5.21. Thank you for your comment!

Really nice tail. Only the road at the beginning is quite difficult with the traffic. The steep section at the very end of the climb is really extreme. We were overtaken by e-bikers just before it. But they couldn't ride up either.

I rode this great tour today. I also noticed that in the upper section, several of the downhill trails do not ride along the narrow path but across the meadow. This causes permanent damage to the land! Stay on the trail, dear bikers! And enjoy the awesome descent!

Wonderful tour and yes - it's probably the steepest road in Switzerland at the top. If anyone drives up there, let me know :-) I have one correction: Alp Bargis doesn't exist there (it's above Trin). The alp is called Bargs and you have to turn right at the following junction: 46.84798, 9.56651 The whole route (up and down) is poorly signposted because the hiking trail doesn't always follow this route either. But the views of the valley and the great descent and the beer in Chur are unique :-)

Very nice tour, really ideal in spring. The approach in summer on the asphalt could be a bit hot. From Mittenberg you should really take the singletrack down to the right and not ride according to "Navi". This should be much nicer. Unfortunately, I only found out about it afterwards. The path to St. Luzi-Kappele was full of hikers, some parts very exposed and quite demanding.

Dude! What are you insulting me for here? You need to tell that to the people it affects, not "If you're not capable of riding corners..." I ride the curves nicely! It's fun! So Stefan Frei: free tip: think first and then write.

wtf... I don't remember seeing you mentioned anywhere... if you hit the trail I don't see a problem. Do you feel addressed anyway...? But elegant how YOU get personal and think you know my name.

Friends, why don't you write comments about the tour, the other readers are interested in that as opposed to the personal hostility.

I last did the tour a year ago and did it again this weekend. And I have to say: what some bikers do on the trail is a real mess! A year ago it was okay, now there are endless shortcuts around hairpin bends and ruts half a meter off the trail. If you're not capable of riding corners and can't hit the trail even on straight sections, then go to the bike park! It is precisely with this behavior that we bikers are gambling away our last acceptance on the hiking trails. If Graubünden has a bad experience with us, don't be surprised if we are soon banned from our beloved trails there too, let alone officially tolerated in other cantons!!!

Wonderful tour. Tip: From Mittelberg, take the road on the right, from there a great singletrack to the town of Chur.
