Goldsee-Trail / Piz Chavalatsch
Description
From the Stilfserjoch, the trail climbs steeply uphill to the Dreisprachenspitze, where the Goldsee Trail begins with the number 20. Initially, it rides smoothly through the high alpine terrain - always in the face of the glaciated Ortler - but then becomes steep and technical before the Furkelhütte. From the chairlift mountain station, you follow a small road and later a single trail to the Stilfseralm. Now you climb up a steep path to Piz Chavalatsch. For most bikers, this section means a 700-metre push section. However, the effort is not just worth it for the fantastic view. The 14er trail from the summit to the Glurnser Alm and on to Glurns is first-class riding fun and is much more attractive than the alpine trail from the Stilfser to the Glurnser Alm. The route ends in the historic village square of Glorenza/Glurns.
Note: The Goldsee Trail must be started before 9 a.m., after which it is always subject to a bike ban. Since 2017, there has also been a bike ban from the Glurnser Alm in the direction of Glurns.

I added the Chavalatsch to the Bimbam, I think it's a good variant. Unfortunately, I hadn't read Kaufmannurs' comment and took the direct route to Chavalatsch... Better down to the Stilfser Alm and then up from there (but I was alone on the way ;-) )
I drove down from the Glurnser Alm at around 18.00 (yes, there really is a prohibition sign a little further down). In the evening there was no one else on the trail... During the day I think it would be tricky if there were a lot of hikers on the path (sometimes narrow...)
The Goldsee Trail is quite nice, but pretty overrated. The Tibet Trail on the other side of the lake has a lot more to offer.
The subsequent ascent to Piz Chavalatsch is quite a struggle, but the descent is all the better. There are several S4 sections, which are also exposed. You're either an absolute pro or your survival instinct kicks in and you just descend briefly.
Which route you want to take from the Glurnser Alm down to Glurns is something everyone has to decide for themselves. In any case, I was very happy with my decision...
Today, on July 1, 2023, the tour is already almost snow-free and the trail is well maintained. Simply a great pleasure, because it is also nice and crisp.
Definitely a top tour! It's a shame I only got to it today. Technically challenging again and again, but also super flowy, especially in the 1st part. Because the Glurner Trail is forbidden, I turned left at Rifairscharte. Also a great, long descent.
The tour is beautiful and challenging. Under no circumstances ride to Rifairscharte as described by Daniel Scherrer. Just steep, overgrown and boring. You are constantly on the brakes at full throttle.
I can confirm Gabester's comment 100 percent. I tried this variant after the Bimbam on July 11, 2025 - rideable, but not worth it.
We (4 technically experienced guys with enduro bikes) were disappointed and overwhelmed. The Goldsee trail is pretty overrated and not worth it. The section from the Goldesee to the Furkelhütte has some tricky passages and if you are not 100% free from vertigo, you should switch to the Bimbam trail at the Goldesee (down to Trafoi and up to the Furkelhütte with the chairlift. After a stretch of gravel road, turn left up to a small plateau where the path splits - don't make the same mistake as we did and take the direct route to Piz Chavalatsch, but ride the official route down to the alp and take the wider steep path up. This can be ridden by e-bike almost all the way up to the Piz. The descent from the summit begins promisingly on a narrow road with hairpin bends, but the joy is short-lived. Soon it's back to lifting the bike up and down over stone blocks and wooden fences. At this point at the latest, it's no longer fun with an e-bike weighing almost 25 kg. Watch out, the signpost to Rifair Schatte is on the ground. Straight ahead, the path ends at a stone wall made of scree. The whole Elevation loss from the Glunser Alm to Glurns has to be done on a Fiorst road due to the driving ban, which is not exactly fun after all the cramping. Conclusion: Completely overrated and only partially suitable for e-bikes! Worthwhile alternatives: Bimbam or Bocchetta di Forcola (world class).
The tour goes from Piz Chavalatsch via the Glurnser Alm down to Glurns.
Is there a recommended trail from the Rifair Scharte (2455) westwards down to Trafoi or Müstair?
Rifaireralm and down to Puntweil is beautiful!
Checked ...July 2019
Officially, the path from the Glurnser Alm to Glurns is closed to bikers by "mayoral decree" :-( Recommendation: After the Tschaggainhütte down to Lichtenberg via trails.
