Nanzlicke | Ride MTB

Nanzlicke

The tour from Gspon over the Gibidum and Bistine passes to Brig consists almost exclusively of single trails. The final descent to Brig is extremely difficult.

Description

The tour starts at the mountain station in Gspon. Climb up a mountain road in the village and then follow an old goods road to the Gibidumpass. Here you follow the Suonenweg to Fulmoss at the far end of the Nanztal valley and reach the Bistinepass on the other side of the valley (here you have to push your bike a few meters). At the Bistinepass, continue up to Inneri Nanzlicke, the highest point of the tour. This is where the crisp singletrail descent towards the Simplon Pass begins, with another ascent at a small lake at 2,200 meters above sea level. There are 170 meters of elevation gain to master on foot up to Gälmji. The descent to Alp Obers Nesseltal is extremely difficult, blocked and forces even very good mountain bikers to push a few times. However, this is followed by top-class singletrail fun. The trail to Unners Nesseltal is phenomenal, as is the subsequent Suonenweg trail on the opposite side of the valley. Finally, a super trail rides to the banks of the Saltina, along which you reach the center of Brig.

I rode the tour on September 3, 2023 after the Moosalp-Jungen tour. Instead of the trail directly over to Gibidum, we took the "downhill" to Visperterminen and then the chairlift to Giw. From there, however, it's a good 250m up to the pass. The trail directly over and our downhill are both absolutely worthwhile. Just like the Suonentrail into Fulmoos, one of my favorite trails in this region despite the longer pushing/carrying section at the back. (The Fulmoos can also be ridden in the opposite direction, but this direction is much better in my opinion). From point 2483, it's super flowy again until the crisp ascent to the inner Nanzlicke (e-bikers can also ride via Üsseri Nanzlicke without any problems). From there it gets really fun until the ascent (push/carry) to Gälmi (approx. 30min). From there to the forest of the upper Nesseltal it is then very technical and blocked, I felt like I was 50% on foot or had to descend about 100 times. This section is really only for absolute DH cracks. From Oberes Nesseltal onwards, however, there are trail fireworks that make you forget the pushing and carrying sections. It's a shame (and incomprehensible) that from Wurzelkapälli onwards, all trails are forbidden for bikes...
At the Napoleonsbrigga above Brig, it is better to cross the Saltina and ride down the road, as there is a gate on the left side of the river that can only be negotiated with the front wheel removed.
If you are afraid of the technical passage at Gälmi, ride directly down to the Simplon Pass and from there take the Stockalperweg under your wheels and, if you wish, you can return to the original route after the "Wassergrabe" via Aspji and Unners Nesseltal.
I ride a Scott Genius Ultimate and am usually in the head group uphill; downhill, I'm always the last one by a long way.

It takes a good 30 minutes to push and carry up to the highest point of Nanzlicke, and around 60 minutes in total for the 360 m ascent.
Half of the descent is in blocked rock, mostly without any danger of falling and moderately steep. I love it, but would really only recommend it to good bikers.
