Walegg – Bannalp

Walegg (Engelberg)

The tour from Engelberg to Walegg and over the Bannalp to Wolfenschiessen is one of the most spectacular singletrail tours in Central Switzerland. It requires an experienced riding style and experience in alpine terrain.

Description

From Engelberg, you climb up a small road via Schwand to Walenalp. Here the road turns into a single trail to Walegg. Very well-trained mountain bikers tackle this almost entirely by riding, while most overcome the almost 300 meters in altitude on foot. The impressive high-level trail through the Walengräben now begins. They are secured with safety ropes. If these are removed (spring or late fall), the route should not be taken as it would be too dangerous. Refresh yourself at Alp Oberfeld before heading down to Bannalp. The upcoming connection to the Haghütte is a single trail that is not rideable throughout. However, the descent from the Haghütte to Oberricken is wonderful. Along the road and finally on a singletrail, the route now leads to Wolfenschiessen and then always on the left side of the Engelberger Aa stream to the shores of Lake Lucerne.

Note: This route leads through a federal hunting ban area. Riding this route on a mountain bike is the responsibility of each individual, with full awareness of the legal situation.

The first part of the ascent is nice, then 300m of pushing up. Well... Top view. Unfortunately, after the Bannalp a hiking trail continues on which you have to descend x times and push for about 30 minutes. The final descent is also only moderately smooth. Would not really recommend the tour. We had a lot of hikers on the way on a Sunday.

As EMTB round tour Engelberg...

As already mentioned by zingg.tobias_78347 via Brunni-Hütte is a very nice trail.

Absolutely no bike ban mentioned also I found nothing on the homepage maybe (hopefully) there was a change in the law!
Section to Hag Hütte not exactly exhilarating maybe better take the lower trail past Bannalpsee.

From Oberrickenbach then simply follow the bike route through the super beautiful Aathal back to Engelberg (attention was currently still closed due to landslide)

I found it well suited for eMTBs (except for the Haghütte section) as everything is rideable except for 2-3 pushing sections and no carrying sections (beware of battery management, up to Brunni ECO then the rest of the tour with Bosch 750s is then easily enough back).

We rode the tour on 19.6.23. We recommend the ascent to the Brunnihütte and from there following the hiking trail to Walenalp. Wonderful views and technically easy. The bike tour from Engelberg to Walenalp ends at Walenalp, which is why there is a sign "End of the bike tour". There is no explicit ban on biking on the signs to the hunting ban area or at Walenalp.
The section to the Haghütte really sapped our strength. Ascending or descending every few meters, as the tour description correctly states. I just hadn't remembered ;-). But from the Haghütte it's really fun again.

Dear ride team
Tours that lead through a bike ban have no place here... Very dubious! This leads to unnecessary criticism of all of us bikers... Is that really necessary?

According to the game warden, there is a general ban on riding on hiking trails in the Bannalp hunting ban area. Fine of CHF 150 per biker, possibly higher for commercial use (bike guiding) and the organizer will be reprimanded.

We were informed at the cable cars in the direction of Bannalpsee that there has been a general ban on bikes in this area for two years and that the cable cars are therefore not allowed to transport bikes. This bike ban would also extend to the high-altitude trail through the Walengräben (bans do not have to be marked by signs - publication is sufficient).

2/5 stars - The two stars are only for the view and the beautiful driveway. I have not taken into account the many hikers. Unfortunately, the descent is anything but smooth. The descent from Bannalp in particular is not very rideable, even as a die-hard enduro rider you push a lot downhill. I was warned about this, but didn't listen to my colleagues. I wouldn't ride it again. If you're in Engelberg, it's better to do the Surenenpass!

However, this trail has now been banned for MTBs.

Where did you get the information about the Walenpfad MTB ban?

I rode the tour on July 14, 2020 (see link > https://out.ac/suBdZ);
Disappointment - there is no official bike ban. Only at Walenalp P1673 there is a bike sign indicating that the official bike trail ends here. To keep it that way, don't come up in droves and only do the tour on weekdays in the morning. Salute the hikers in a friendly manner and let them pass at a safe distance, as the Waleggpfad is steep and :-)

Hello! Thanks for your feedback! Would you also say this track does not fit for e bike or at your opinion it can easily be done with e bike? Thanks for your answer!

The route is also worthwhile in terms of the trails and the scenery. The bumpy section between Bannalp and Haghütte is a little tiring. On the other hand, the Haghütte has a very pretty pub where you can get something cool to drink and good fruit.
