Haute Cime (Dents du Midi)

Haute Cime (Dents du Midi)

The Haute Cime (3258 meters above sea level) is the highest point of the famous Dents du Midi high above Martigny and a well-known alpine hiking route. The mountain is considered an insider tip among mountain bikers, but riders with excellent riding skills and a flair for bike mountaineering will get their money's worth here. Partly because of the 3000-metre descent.

Description

The tour to the Haute Cime is not for the faint-hearted! The steep ascent is extremely tough and the descent extremely difficult. However, very good mountain bikers who enjoy unusual routes are in the right place here. You start at Les Marécottes station, from where you can take the train from Martigny. Climb up a small road to the campsite in Vans, where the first effort is required: The gravel road up to the Auberge de Salanfé is steep and rough, but that's just the beginning! The section along the reservoir is a short breather until the steep path up to the Col de Susanfe at the end of the gravel road. Here the bike usually has to be pushed because the ground is too loose and the path too steep. Finally, you reach the crossing and thus the next stage of the ascent. From here, the bike rests on your shoulders, the path is narrow but easy to walk on up to the Col des Paresseux. We recommend leaving the bike here and tackling the rocky final section to the summit on foot. You will be rewarded on the exposed and exceptional summit with a first-class panoramic view.

The descent is the next challenge of the tour. The section from the summit to the Col des Paresseux would be short in places, but the bike would have to be carried over and over again through the steep and slippery terrain. It makes sense to leave the bike at the Col des Paresseux because the trail is rideable from here. It winds its way through the steep, gravelly terrain. A concentrated riding style is required until the descent after the Col de Susanfe (on the ascent route) becomes fast and flowy. Finally, you return to the Auberge de Salanfé and climb up to the Col du Jorat to start the long descent to Evionnaz. The start is somewhat unspectacular, but from Jorat d'en Haut the route becomes a singletrail hit. The trail rides through the steep forest terrain in a variety of ways, sometimes fast and flowing, then rocky and challenging again. It continues in this way to Evionnaz, from where you can take the cycle path along the Rhône back to Martigny.

Tip: Spend the night at the Auberge de Salanfé and head up to the Haute Cime at sunrise.

Note: There are a lot of hikers on the route to the Haute Cime. This is particularly tricky on the descent in the section between Col des Paresseux and Col de Susanfe, because mountain bikers can dislodge stones on the loose ground, which then endanger other people further down. A very considerate riding style is required here.
