Strada Cadorna

Singletrail

The two world wars are not a pretty chapter in Europe's history. But decades later, mountain bikers benefit from the first-class trails that soldiers laid in the Alps. For example on the Strada Cadorna in the lower Valle d'Ossola. Here, a top trail rides through 100 hairpin bends and 1300 vertical meters into the valley.

Description

Nothing comes for free - even the Strada Cadorna has to be worked hard for first. And on an asphalt road. It rides from the village of Ornavasso over many bends up to Alpe Rossombolmo. The road surface is a little patchy in the upper part, but for mountain bikers the road is a good basis for the ascent. Shortly before Alpe Rossombolmo, turn right onto a singletrail to Capella del Buon Pastore. This is the starting point of the long descent, which is a little challenging for the first few meters, but then quickly becomes very flowy. The path winds its way through the forest in a fluid and fairly flat manner - pure riding fun for mountain bikers! This takes you to Capanna Legnano, where the second part of the descent begins. From now on you are on the actual Strada Cadorna, although the path is now a little narrower, but still super smooth to ride. Shortly before you reach the large fortress, the path widens again and is varied to ride over solid stone slabs. After the fortress, you enter the final section, which requires a little more riding technique at the very end, but otherwise has the same flowing character. Conclusion: This descent is one of the best that the Valle d'Ossola and the western area of Lake Maggiore have to offer.

We rode the tour today.
Conclusion: From Capanna Legnano, much of the route is completely unrideable.

I rode the tour from Capanna Legnano today somewhat unplanned. The traverse to the first chicanes is a bit overgrown and with some branches in the trail. But then it gets better quickly. I had fun.

Upper section of the descent is easy to ride, middle section in the forest very overgrown and the path is almost invisible, a pity for the otherwise beautiful and strenuous tour

Upper part of the descent is technical and very overgrown. Ground path partly not visible! There are still a few trees in the way from the storm, but easy to avoid.

In any case, the trail is impassable, especially in the lower section after the storms of October 2nd and 3rd, and this is unlikely to change for some time to come; there is fallen timber everywhere and whole groups of trees lying across the trails on Lake Maggiore (not only on the Strada Cadorna...). You might climb over one or two fallen trees, but then it gets tiring, you have to give up and return to the asphalt in disgust. The storm damage is enormous! Date of the visit: October 9, 2020

I can confirm this, because we were there with e-bikes and organic bikes in June and everything was tiptop

Hey Ride! It would be nice if you would check your tours every now and then. In the age of e-bikes, that wouldn't be a problem. "The best the area has to offer" turned out to be an unrideable jungle. We pedaled up over a thousand meters, but unfortunately had to capitulate and turn back. Thank you!
