There are a few fun trails from Suruggen and Honegg down to Altstätten SG. However, some people think that there is too much riding on them. The Gaiserbahn, which rides from Altstätten to Gais AR, 500 meters higher up, is a different story. There are too few people on this line, and the operation no longer covers the costs.

The fact that the municipality of Altstätten now wants to define three bike routes in a public consultation process and then have them built is partly due to the work of the MTB Rheintal association. On the other hand, supporters of the Gaiserbahn have come up with the idea of attracting more bikers as passengers on the historic railroad line. The three routes now under discussion all use the railroad. It has had a bike trailer for some time. If you pedal up another 300 meters in altitude from Gais, you then have 800 meters of pure downhill fun all the way down to Altstätten.

The company Bikernetzwerk is also significantly involved. Over the phone, they are confident that the project will get off the ground and that the first construction work can begin in 2024. Everyone who knows and appreciates the trails in Altstätt will be particularly pleased: The future official bike trails are ones that are already being ridden now. And there will be no bans once the official trails have been completed.
