In the canton of Zurich, the course will be set in the near future: By the beginning of 2026, the cantonal government must set out in a report how a mountain bike infrastructure that meets the demand can be realized. In administrative jargon: the canton's executive must create a legal planning basis for this. The deadline for this is the beginning of February 2026. A new forest development plan is also in the works, which will also affect mountain biking in the forest. It is due to come into force in spring 2026.

The Interessengemeinschaft Mountainbike Zürich therefore has a lot to do. In addition to the co-presidency of Züritrails, the board also includes representatives from Zürioberland Biketrails, Lägern Biketrails and MTB Oberamt (the region south of the Albis), as well as the person responsible for bike planning in the city of Uster and the president of Zürich Cycling. This association is itself already a cantonal umbrella organization - not just for mountain biking, but for pretty much everything that can be done with bikes, from BMX to artistic cycling and from the track to the trial course.

Over 60 clubs are listed as members on the website. Here, too, the activities go far beyond mountain biking. The IG has also brought Pro Velo Zürich, the canton's specialist department for bicycle traffic and the Zurich Cantonal Association for Sport ZKS on board as strategic partners. One of the tasks of the specialist department is to ensure the implementation of the Cycle Path Act - which includes a trail network that meets the demand. Among other things, the ZKS has the interesting task of distributing the money from the lottery fund for sports projects in the canton.

The IG MTB ZH - the abbreviation is its official name according to the statutes - is now the official face of what it claims are 180,000 female mountain bikers in the canton. It represents a good 5,000 of them through its member clubs. The previous cantonal umbrella organization, Trailfriends, has vacated the field. The two associations that shaped this old IG, Biketrails Pfannenstiel and IG Biketrails Winterthur, are missing among the member associations of the new IG.
