The renovation of the upper section of the Jakobshorn cable car in summer 2022 means that it will not be possible to ride the cable car from Davos Platz to the Ischalp middle station until 22 July 2022. Operations on the renovated upper section to the summit of the Jakobshorn are expected to start in September. Davos is seizing the opportunity and is planning to build a second trail on the route between the Jakobshorn, Sertig and Jatzmäder, which is heavily frequented by both mountain bikers and hikers, from 2022 to 2023.

Free ride on the Alps Epic Trail

The popularity of the Alps Epic Trail has strained the tolerance of trail users in the past and sometimes caused dangerous situations. For this reason, a second trail between Jakobshorn and Sertig and as a continuation to Äbirügg is to provide a remedy, which will make the only trail in Switzerland to be awarded the title of "Epic Trail" by the IMBA even more epic.

Construction of the second trail from Jakobshorn to Sertig, which is intended for hikers, is due to start in summer 2022 and be completed in summer 2023 with the continuation between Sertig and Jatzmäder. It is planned that the existing trail from Jakobshorn to Sertig, which is popular with mountain bikers, will continue to be used as the first section of the Alps Epic Trail and that the new hiking trail will be built in parallel.

For the continuation from Sertig to Äbirügg, the plan is to use the existing trail as a hiking trail and create a new trail for mountain bikers. This should have similar characteristics to the existing trail, contain no artificial elements such as jumps or berms and continue to be accessible in both directions. The partial revision of the local planning required for the project was approved by the canton of Graubünden subject to conditions, meaning that the construction project can now begin.
