Wheels (normally) provide the contact between the bike and the ground. If the bike goes off track, they are often the first components on the bike to suffer. In the case of complete wheels, this often means the end of the planned tour, but also several weeks of crispbread and budget-busting: replacing the front or rear wheel is a big expense. Mavic is now addressing this problem by offering an extended warranty for all complete wheels from model year 2007 onwards, which also covers accidents or falls. In the Mavic Product Protection Plan (MP3 for short), the wheel manufacturer undertakes to repair or replace defective wheels free of charge for two years.

Those wishing to take advantage of this service must purchase a warranty supplement in the form of a Map from a Mavic dealer. They must then use this to register their wheelset on the Mavic website within 5 days of purchase in order to activate the crash service. The offer applies both to racing and mountain bike wheels purchased separately and to Mavic wheels fitted to complete bikes by the manufacturer. The price of the two-year warranty extension depends on the new price of the wheels. The service costs CHF 23 for the entry-level Crossride wheelset and CHF 113 for the top-of-the-range Crossmax SLR Disc MTB model. Savers can also purchase the service individually for the front or rear wheel.
