It is Sauser's second success at the European long-distance championships. Back then, the man from Sigriswil won 13 seconds ahead of Austria's Christoph Soukup. At the title fights in Ballyhoura - in County Limerick in Ireland - Soukup is once again on the podium with Sauser. This time, however, the Austrian is clearly beaten after 93 kilometers, a good six minutes behind. Sauser's team colleague Jaroslav Kulhavy takes second place. Together, the two set themselves apart from the competition early on. However, Sauser is stronger on the mountain and leaves Olympic champion Kulhavy behind. The Czech is 43 seconds down at the finish. Defending champion Alban Lakata (AUT) had to settle for tenth place after a poor start, a puncture and a strong chase to catch up.

With Tereza Hurikova's victory, the second gold medal also goes to the Specialized team. The Czech took the title in a start-finish victory. The favourite Sally Bigham (GBR) finished second, as she did last year. Norway's Borghil Løvset finished in bronze. Sofia Pezzatti was the only Swiss woman at the start in Ballyhoura, finishing in twelfth place.
