From March 1, 2022, an additional control plate for mounting on rear bicycle carriers can be ordered. The cantonal road traffic authorities and the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO) are working together to introduce it. The third license plate for motor vehicles, which can be mounted on the rear carrier, eliminates the need to transfer the rear plate from the car to the rear carrier.

The new license plate is a copy of the main rear plate. To prevent any misuse, it has a red instead of white base color and has no independent legal significance. It may only be used together with the main plate pair. The third sign is optional. It is still permitted to mount the rear license plate on the bicycle carrier.The cantons have already prepared the ordering options together with the plate manufacturers. At the same time, FEDRO is carrying out clarifications with neighboring countries to ensure that this license plate is known and accepted.
