The year is 2002 and the euro is introduced as the single currency in Europe. Brazil become world football champions against Germany in Japan. Switzerland is in the grip of Expo 02 fever. Simon Amman flies to a double victory at the Olympic Games in Salt Lake City. And Vitali and Wladimir Klitschko enter the ring as professional boxers.

In mountain biking, Roland Green and Gunn-Rita Dahle become world champions in Kaprun in 2002. You don't hear much more about Kaprun later, nor about Green. Downhill legends Nicolas Vouilloz and Anne-Caroline Chausson are on the podium. And in Switzerland, the outdoor magazine "Move" is published under new management. The then 27-year-old Thomas Giger takes over the struggling title and announces full-bodied that now comes the "Geo" of mountain bikers. Bold images, great emotions and tangible authenticity. That was exactly twenty years ago.

Birthdays are a good opportunity for a look back. That's why Ride comes with this special edition. An issue with a look back. On the projects that were launched. And those that vanished into thin air. To the stars that rose. And those that faded. To our own history. And to the development of the sport as a whole. How the demand for accessible single trails has developed. What changes racing has undergone. And about the development of the bike industry and mountain bike technology.

On the occasion of such anniversaries, it's okay to celebrate yourself. Ride has achieved a lot in that time. The wild scene magazine of the early days has become a multi-award-winning specialist title. The freaks of yesteryear are now taken seriously. This also applies to the sport of mountain biking as a whole. Over the last twenty years, it has emerged from its niche and become socially acceptable. Well, at least in Switzerland. It has developed into a relevant tourism factor. And an important branch of industry.

The twentieth anniversary of Ride is an opportunity to look back. This special edition is dedicated to this theme. A look back from different perspectives. Memories of completely different people. Anecdotes and analyses, highs and lows. Because the past becomes really exciting when you capture it. That's the credo of this issue.
