Fully gripping the handlebars and shifting gears at the same time: A thumb shifter definitely can't do that, but a twist shifter can. For fans of grip shift levers, the Swiss cockpit specialist Zirbel now offers a fresh retrofit solution. In combination with Sram's AXS derailleurs, gear changes are made with a rotating, knobbed plastic ring. Wrist shifting at Zirbel requires a cartridge for the electronics, which is parked in the handlebar end and requires modifications to the handlebar itself. Two small slots must be made in the end of the handlebar so that the cartridge can be attached. A hole is also required at the bottom of the handlebars to connect the shifter and cartridge.

Zirbel also offers a twist shifter for the Smart.Shift transmission from Pinion, which does not even require a cartridge or reworking of the handlebars.
