Monte Tamaro – was lange währt…

Much has changed around it, the positioning of the region, the riding technique of the mountain bikers, the material. The route has remained virtually unchanged. The Tamaro Tour is the great classic among mountain bike routes.

When Ride first published the Tamaro Tour in 2003, an official version already existed. With a few modifications, Ride gave it a significantly higher proportion of trails and moved the end point to Agno on Lake Lugano. This procedure has been used several times in the history of Ride because official routes often leave out the most attractive trails. Monte Tamaro is emblematic of this.

The only change to the Tamaro tour was on the ascent. Twenty years ago, the prevailing attitude was that you always had to master a mountain bike route entirely under your own steam. Transport by cable car was frowned upon and the 1400-metre ascent from Rivera to the transmission tower was considered an entrance fee that had to be paid for the descent. Today, almost everyone takes the gondola, reducing the ascent to just a fifth. In keeping with the spirit of the times, the aim is to optimize the cost-benefit ratio.

Interesting about the Tamaro route is the circuitous route that the Lugano region and the mountain railroads on Monte Tamaro have taken. After an initial general lack of interest in mountain biking, the region made a U-turn and hosted the world championships in 2003. However, the momentum did not last long, mountain biking faded into the background again and the downhill course was dismantled. The major event proved to be a flash in the pan until a few years ago, when the canton of Ticino and in particular the tourism organization of the Lugano region began to take mountain biking more seriously again. One thing, however, has remained unchanged throughout this back and forth: the route of the Tamaro Tour. Simply a classic. According to the definition: a classic is the timeless counterpoint to time-dependent fashion trends.
