It was supposed to be a casual family outing for Nino Schurter, including a ride on a scooter. The result: a dislocated shoulder and a broken arm, followed by transport by rescue helicopter. Schurter says he’s never felt such pain. Nevertheless, his hospital stay was “only” an outpatient affair—he was able to leave the clinic that same evening. However, he’ll now be sidelined for several weeks.

Schurter currently has to endure not only the pain of a broken bone but also the ridicule that the best mountain biker of all time—who has set new standards for riding technique on the racecourse—has now, of all things, suffered a serious accident on a scooter.
