Swiss Epic Blog: Lots of flow, wobbly bridges and sausages for tires

On the third day of the Perskindol-Swiss-Epic, the participants do a big loop around Leukerbad and the Gehrig twins enjoy the many flowing trails in the middle of it all. But even the second stage is not without incident, as Anita explains in the blog.

Today, 52 kilometers, 1050 vertical meters and around 3400 Elevation loss are on the flow program of the Perskindiol-Swiss-Epic. But first we have to earn our way down today's first descent. We crank up a regular climb of around 350 vertical meters before entering a wonderful single forest trail that could have gone on forever. The finest coniferous soil peppered with a few roots and beautiful round bends - a poem!

Flick record in flow paradise

After a rapid intermediate descent through a beautiful old Valais village, we enter the second section of the descent. This perfectly embodies the rougher and rockier side of Valais. Caro and I find a great rhythm on the kilometer-long Suonen trail that takes us into the Valais wine region. We pass the vineyards of Varen and Salgesch. I really have to control myself not to steal a few grapes.

The route goes up and down again and again and is sometimes very rocky. Before long, I hit a sharp stone in a fast section and the air in the tire just about goes out with an unpleasant sounding "Chhhhhhhhhhh". The ride is immediately interrupted and Caro rushes to the rescue with a Maxalami tire plug and CO2 cartridge. The hole in the tread is quickly plugged - plug in and add some air, and the ride continues. As quickly as this repair went, it was definitely a personal "patch record".

After 25 kilometers of trail fun, we turn into our first section destination, both with a big grin on our faces - we've found a good rhythm. The flow riders can hop on the shuttle to Vercorin, from where we immediately set off on the descent to the famous Hange Bridge near Niouc. The bridge is impossible to ride. It is too narrow for the wide handlebars. That's for the best, because we definitely don't feel like riding here. It's rocking quite a bit in the meantime and there's a 200-metre deep gorge below us. Our next intermediate destination is near Leuk. Despite the long pedaling distance, the route there couldn't be more beautiful. Although the trail in the Pfynwald forest has a few short, biting climbs, it meanders beautifully through the pine forest - simply heavenly.

A quick sole on the bike parquet

Just before we load onto the last shuttle back to Leukerbad, it starts to rain. The temperature at the Rinderhütte, where we start the last stage, is low, but at least it's not raining heavily. The precipitation has softened the hiking trails quite a bit and you have to pedal a lot in between to avoid getting stuck in the mud.

Very important here: A distinction must also be made between cow shit and dirt. The cows have dumped massive puddles in the middle of the trail - thank you dear cattle! We do a nice little dance, because otherwise it's almost impossible to keep control on our bikes. Our rear wheels are constantly trying to overtake us. But the fun is perfect and the trail leads us back to Leukerbad via some technical passages. Today we definitely found the flow and worked really well as a team - not a matter of course with twin sisters ;) A lot of rain is forecast for Thursday. Nothing new for us after five out of seven Enduro World Series races were wet. But we're still looking forward to it.
