Spotguide Glarus

The canton of Glarus with its imposing rock towers is a gem for mountaineers - but also has a lot to offer mountain bikers. For topographical reasons, it is not as rich as Graubünden or Valais, but it is extremely easy to reach from the Zurich region, for example. Mountain bikers tackling the Glarus terrain should have some juice in their calves (or in their e-bike battery) if possible. The climbs are often quite steep, and there are mountain railroads for mountain bikers in the Braunwald region in particular.

In addition to muscle power, you also need some riding technique - the single trails in the canton of Glarus are often challenging. The options for beginners are limited, but experienced bikers will have all the more fun. Not to forget: The canton of Glarus has two exceptional lakes. The Klöntalersee is a natural spectacle, while the Walensee with its Mediterranean flair around Weesen is a great place to swim.

Braunwald is the enduro hotspot in Glarus. Good trails, several mountain railroads and a permanent view of the Tödi.

The Klöntalersee offers little in the way of trails, but is a scenic highlight.

Getting there

Arrival by public transport

The gateway to Glarnerland is Ziegelbrücke station on the Zurich - Chur line. From here, the train travels to Glarus and on via Schwanden to Linthal. Bicycles can easily be transported on the trains. If you want to go to Elm, take the bus in Schwanden, where bike transport is also possible. Braunwald is also easy to reach by public transport, with a funicular going up from Linthal.

Arrival by car

The canton of Glarus can be reached by private vehicle via the A3 highway (Zurich - Sargans - Chur), taking the Niederurnen exit. All villages in Glarus are easy to reach by car - except Braunwald. The village is car-free and only accessible by funicular from Linthal.
