Wissmilenpass

Wissmeilenpass

The Wissmilen Pass connects the Flumserberge with the Glarnerland and is also ideal for mountain biking - provided you are prepared to push your bike a few meters uphill. In terms of scenery, the tour is a blast.

Description

The ideal starting point for the Wissmilen tour is Tannenbodenalp. A PostBus line leads up from Flums, from Unterterzen you can take the gondola lift. Now follow mountain bike route 470 to the Maschgenkamm mountain station. This section leads exclusively along alpine roads, which are very steep at the end. The first-class panorama with Lake Walen and the Churfirsten mountains distracts from the exertions. The ascent would be even easier with the chairlift up to the Prodkamm and from there on a trail over to the Maschgenkamm.

At the Maschgenkamm, the first part of the ascent is done, you circle the Ziger and then follow the single trail, which winds its way through the extensive alpine terrain and ends at the Spitzmeilenhütte. A refreshment stop is recommended here, as the next 340 meters of altitude require a lot of energy. The bike has to be pushed as far as the Wissmilen Pass. If you are on an e-bike, you can manage almost the entire ascent by riding with good riding technique. The pushing aid is used briefly on individual sections and the final stretch. However, the scenery on the pass is fantastic with the rock towers of the Wissmilen and Spitzmeilen, the countless peaks of the Glarus Alps with the Tödi and Vrenelis Gärtli towering into the sky to the south, and the Churfirsten and Vorarlberg Alps forming the horizon to the north.

Now the singletrail descent begins, tricky at first, then increasingly smooth. You pass Alp Oberstafel, then follow the alpine road for a while until a wonderful trail leads to the valley floor at the ski hut. Now you change sides of the valley, ride on trails on the left-hand side of the stream for a while and then ride down into the valley on a combination of trails and gravel. In Engi, the route climbs a little again to finally reach Schwanden on the Hinteregg trail, a mix of crisp trails and gravel road sections. This forms the end of this wonderful and extraordinary tour.

Tips:

  • It is even easier to start the tour from the Prodkamm. From there, take the chairlift.
  • The tour is ideal as a day trip from the Zurich region. To do this, take the S-Bahn to Unterterzen in the morning and then the S-Bahn from Schwanden back to Zurich after the tour.

Many thanks to the commentators for their input on route optimization. We have now optimized the route a little with your suggestions.

I did the tour by e-bike in August 2025, starting and finishing in Weesen - fantastic, if only because of the route along Lake Walen. After the Lüsermatt Alp, I turned right to take the Innerbergli Trail. You can do it, but to be honest: it was okay, but doesn't knock your socks off.

The trail from the Mülibachtal ski hut was completely different - really brilliant! Flow, views and a few technical sections, just the way you want it. In the valley, I rode straight over the bridge to the Gamszinggenhütte and turned right there - a real insider tip: a beautiful meadow trail that turns into an old cart path, simply wonderful to ride.

Shortly before Schwanden there was the Hintereggtrail as a bonus - be sure to take it, it's great fun!

Beautiful day tour. There were many hikers on the way from Maschgenkamm to Spitzmeilenhütte. From Alp Oberstafel it might make sense, as someone has already written, to turn left down into the valley or a little later right across the meadow to Berglistein and down there.

We did this tour on Sunday 17.7. - wonderful landscape. At the beginning there were quite a few hikers on the way, so we recommend going during the week - or even earlier than we did.
On the descent after the Wissmeilen Pass, there would be a hiking trail branching off to the left down into the ravine from the Mühlebach alpine farm (which would certainly be nice) - but it is closed due to herds of suckler cows! So you have to take the normal alpine road for the descent.

I reached the Wissmilen Pass from Engi on July 10, 2022. The ascent is generally steep. The first part of the valley is still pedalable, but the middle section up to the Mülibachtal ski hut was too steep for me and I pushed the bike. On the flat, the route continued briskly to the Mülibachtal alpine farm and from here I had to push or, towards the end, carry the bike.
But the panorama on the pass is impressive!
The descent is rocky after the pass and becomes increasingly flowy. From the Fursch alpine hut, along the bike route, the trail is easy to ride. At Flumserberg-Portels, I rode down through the Maltinawald forest, which offered some very nice singletrails at the end.

I did this tour on 13.09.2021 combined with a couple of laps of the Flumserberg Bikepark for a starter and the Glarus Flow trail from Schwamm for dessert. With a lift pass I could skip the first bit of the climb of the main course. The ride from Maschgenkamm to Spitzmeilenhütte is pleasant with great views. From Spitzmeilenhütte on it‘s pretty much a hike-a-bike the whole way up to Wissmeilenpass getting pretty steep towards the end. The trail down from Wissmeilenpass is fun and fast in places with a few techy bits but all rideable. If you can make it to Glarus by 15:53 there‘s a bus with a bike rack that will take you halfway up to Schwamm to include the Glarus flow trail for dessert. Great day of mtb!

As of today, 27.06.2021, no chance - simply too much snow. This year it will probably take until around August to get enough snow.

Combined the tour on 11.08.2020 with a stay at the Bikepark Flumserberg.
I started the tour around midday from the Prodkamm.

There is a lot of hiking activity up to the Maschgenkamm. From there to the Spitzmeilenhütte, nothing stands in the way of biking fun. The trail is varied and rideable in all but a few places.
From the Spitzmeilenhütte to the Madseeli, pushing is the order of the day.
After that it gets really steep, so I had no choice but to put the bike on my shoulder for the last 200-300 meters of altitude.
The view from the top of the pass quickly makes you forget the exertions.
The descent begins with a few hairpin bends before it becomes smoother. The trail is mostly technical and rough, with the flow coming more on short sections.
The trail ends at the Alpwirtschaft Mühlebach. I then turned left onto the hiking trail, which makes the trail a lot more fun. Towards the end, the flow is also good before the trail turns into the original route.
The gravel path to Engi provides a good pace, with one or two jumps to discover.

All in all, a varied tour.
