Sarganser Frühlingstour
Description
In Sargans, you initially take the cycle path to the banks of the Rhine, which you follow downstream to the first bridge at Trübbach. Here you cross the Rhine, pass the village of Mäls and then climb up to Regitzer Spitz from the north side. Only in the last few meters do you have to push your bike a few meters at best, but the panorama of the Chur and Sargans Rhine valleys is first-class from up here. The descent to the Ochsenberg forest clearing follows, a mixture of forest road and single trail, until the serpentine trail down to Fläsch starts on the south side of the clearing. The first part of the tour is done, now you cross the Rhine at the Heidiland highway service station, reach Bad Ragaz and now climb up the road to Pfäfers. At a turn-off, keep left on a very steep asphalt road to Furggels. From the small village, you climb up to Pizalun on a single trail. Well-trained bikers ride most of the singletrail ascent. The viewing platform on the Pizalun can be reached via a small ladder and the view is stunning. Incidentally, the Regitzer Spitz, which you climbed earlier, can be seen opposite. The descent now leads almost exclusively along fun single trails, past the Naturfreundehaus near Jägeri, and finally to the mountain road above Mastrils. Here you turn sharp right, pass Prafieb and reach Mastrils and Landquart via Isla. You can return to Sargans by train or along the banks of the Rhine.
Note: The descent from Ochsenberg to Fläsch has been closed since fall 2016. It is quite possible that this route will never be accessible again due to falling rocks and the risk of landslides. The tour has therefore been rerouted and now leads from Ochsenberg via Matluschkopd to Fläsch. This singletrail descent is on a par with the original descent, but includes a short counter-climb and a few extremely tricky switchbacks on the descent
Tip: The tour is very easy to do from Zurich by taking the train to Sargans and then returning from Landquart. Those arriving by car should ideally start the tour at the Heidiland freeway service area

On 22.5.2022 we rode the first part of the tour, the Regitzer Spitz from and to Raststätte Heidiland, i.e. first on the NE side of the Rhine to Balzers and from there as described. Overall a nice tour with indeed impressive views from the summit and a descent with a Lake Garda feeling via the new route down to the east of Fläsch. What is currently (05.2022) not good is the section over the alpine meadows north of the Regitzer Spitz. Nothing is rideable there, not even for super calves, as there is considerable tread damage from the cattle, combined with often half-meter-deep washouts and gullies that are less wide than the pedal width. At the moment, this means a lot of bike lifting. Climbing a bike = carrying it doesn't really work either. It would have been better to stay on the road and pedal along it from the south to the summit. The descent makes up for it. If you can do tight hairpin bends, even the last section of the singletrack is twice as much fun - otherwise it's just a simple pleasure, reminiscent of the trails on the lake. It has something.
Did the tour on 09.05.21. Unfortunately, extensive forestry work is currently taking place from the descent after the Naturfreunde Haus Jägeri. The trail to Mastrils and Landquart is currently closed and definitely not passable.
For the ascent from Bad Ragaz to Pfäfers, I recommend taking bike route 482 and then crossing the Tamina bridge. Since the construction of this bridge in 2017, this ascent has been closed to cars.
The descent from Ochsenberg to Fläsch is permanently closed (as of winter 2016). It is virtually impossible to get through. The route has therefore been redesigned and now rides over the Matluschkopf. This version is just as good as the original descent - even longer.
Super Tour
I rode the tour on 10.07.16 and can only confirm that the descent was closed. Fortunately, we found another trail descent.
What bothered me though: I rode according to the gpx data and I have to say, I had to shoulder my bike for most of the last 200Hm to Regitzer Spitz. The forest and meadow path was totally covered in cow hooves.
Otherwise it was a very nice tour.
I did the tour on Thu. 7.7.16. The Ochsenberg-Fläsch serpentine trail is and will probably remain closed for longer due to a massive landslide/rockfall. The rest of the tour was simply brilliant! Especially the super flowy descent from Jägeri to Mastrils is simply awesome and put a smile on my face that still lasts today!!!
Ride on....
