Gonzen (Walserberg) | Ride MTB

Gonzen (Walserberg)

The Gonzen rises steeply and seemingly impregnably above Sargans. However, the dominant mountain is easily accessible from the rear and is also ideal as a mountain bike destination. The view of the Rhine Valley and the Seez Valley is fantastic. The singletrail descent leads back to Sargans via the Walserberg.

Description

The first part of the tour rides along the marked Palfries mountain bike route (477). This takes you from Sargans train station to Trübbach and then branches off onto the ascent via a small mountain road. This rides past the Malanserholz to the Scheidweg at 1360 meters above sea level. Here you leave the signposted mountain bike route and reach the alpine settlement of Rieterhütten and the ridge below the Gonzen. Ideally, you should leave your mountain bike here and walk to the summit of the Gonzen with its fantastic views of the Chur and St. Gallen Rhine valleys and the Seez valley. The descent initially rides along the ascent route, turning right after Rieterhütten to Berghaus Gonzen. This is where the singletrail descent over the Walserberg begins, always following the hiking trail markings until you reach an Arto plateau at Matug. Here you take a slight downhill left on a forest road until a small path branches off to the left. This forms the final section of the tour and rides to the Sixer district of Sargans.

Alternative: On the Gonzen tour (Spina Trail), the descent rides down the western side of the Gonzen via the crisp Spina Trail.

Two tips for those who like a more challenging ride:
1. carry your bike towards the Gonzen summit to where the wooden steps begin. This gives you a nice singletrail start, which is easily S3.
2. branch off to the left (north) from the suggested route at the Lanaberg ski lodge (point 1076) and then, after approx. 0.5 km, don't miss the mini-junction. There are hairpin bends à gogo. Most of them are just about rideable without offsetting. Take Plänggli and Wolfsloch with you.
3. if you still haven't had enough, take a sharp right just before Chlefibünt (point 549), up the road to Matug - Chalchofen - Fuchsagger - Atscha. There take the steep path down for the last hairpin bends (and at one point a few reinforcing iron steps to climb down). You then come out at the climbing rock face.

I rode the tour today, 23.9.
The first 500 Elevation loss lead over alpine meadows and alpine paths....then it goes into a forest with an S1 - in places S2 - trail passage......then you follow a crossing on a forest path with some ups and downs, before it then goes the last 200 Elevation loss into a flowing S1 trail with a few hairpin bends.
Conclusion: For those who like riding (S2) single trails, the whole thing is not worth it, to speak of a "single trail descent" from Berghaus Gonzen is simply just as wrong as the three riding technique points given.....
