Sur Tuot: Davo Dieu - Fimberpass

Fuorcla Champatsch

The Fuorcla Davo Dieu is an alpine pass between Scuol and Ischgl. Combined with the Fuorcla Champatsch and the Fimber Pass, it makes for an epic mountain bike tour, with a dash of adventure on the Fuorcla Davo Dieu.

Description

The tour starts at the upper station of the Motta-Naluns cable car in Scuol. From there, you pedal uphill for a bit on a gravel road until a well-maintained singletrack branches off to the right, leading to the base of the climb up to Fuorcla Champatsch. The ascent follows a trail that is well-maintained throughout and is easily rideable with a little leg strength or with motor assistance. The Fuorcla impresses with the play of colors in the rock layers, and the pass offers a fascinating spectacle.

Next comes the connection to Fuorcla Davo Dieu, which begins with a short and very smooth descent and then continues as a silky-smooth S1 singletrack through a wild and romantic mountain landscape to the small lake at the foot of Fuorcla Davo Dieu. Now comes the pièce de résistance. It’s a 150-meter climb from the lake to the Fuorcla, and you’ll have to carry your mountain bike up a steep slope of large boulders—riding or pushing is impossible here. This strenuous effort takes you all the way to Fuorcla Davo Dieu, the unassuming alpine pass connecting the Engadin to the Paznaun. The descent starts off promisingly—but only for the first 30 meters. After that, you’ll have to push your mountain bike for about 100 meters of descent through rocky, obstructed terrain. Once again, riding is out of the question. The section where you have to carry your bike uphill and the section where you have to push it downhill are the downsides of this tour. On the descent, the rocky trail suddenly turns into an extremely fun S2 singletrack that leads to a lovely plateau. The trail then continues on to the Heidelberger Hütte.

Now it’s time for the return trip to the Engadin via the Fimber Pass. The ascent follows a well-maintained trail that can be ridden uphill with plenty of power or with motor assistance. Non-motorized mortals will have to push their bikes up the 350 meters of elevation gain to the pass. Then comes the alpine—but very fun—descent down into Val Sinestra. Rough and rocky at the top, becoming increasingly flowy and faster further down. Later, you pass the Zuort farm and then head down via playful trails to the Hotel Val Sinestra. From here, you pedal up the road—a total of just under 100 meters of elevation gain. This brings you to the main valley of the Lower Engadine, and you head down via very varied singletrack trails to the campground near Sur En. You ride back to Scuol along the Inn River.

Notes

  • The tour and the trails are practically tailor-made for e-mountain bikes, were it not for the Fuorcla Davo Dieu with its section where you have to carry your bike. If you don’t mind carrying an e-mountain bike for about 100 meters of elevation gain and more or less pushing it for the remaining 50 meters, we highly recommend using an e-mountain bike.
  • The tour is legal because you remain entirely within Graubünden and thus on Swiss territory. The Heidelberger Hut is also located on Swiss territory. Therefore, there is no conflict with Austrian law, which prohibits mountain biking.

A very nice tour through magnificent scenery. As described, the section at Fuorcla Davo Dieu involves a bit of carrying uphill and a bit of pushing downhill. The lower section in Val Fenga before the Heidelbergerhütte is a bit rough in places, so you don’t really get into a flow there. The descent from the Fimber Pass is great.
At Griosch (1,817), turn right immediately and follow the hiking trail down toward Zuort. This is a fun trail. On the descent, following the track along the cart path across the meadow, the bridge at the bottom is missing, so you’ll have to get back onto the hiking trail anyway.
At the fork at 1,325, keep right and follow the trail down to the road (1,218), then take the hiking trail below the road to Crusch and from there down to Punt sur En. This adds another 100 meters of elevation loss on the trail.
