Trans-Altarezia

The "Trans-Altarezia" is possibly the most attractive multi-day mountain bike tour in Graubünden. Highlights such as the Fimber Pass, the Val d'Uina, the Bocchetta di Forcola, the Val Viola or the route to San Romerio in the Val Poschiavo are tackled on the four to five stages.

Description

Ideally, you start the "Trans Alta Rezia" in Scuol, get on the Postbus to Samnaun and then take the gondola to the Alptrider Sattel. The route is still hard enough, so this first ascent can be replaced by the train ride without a guilty conscience. The tour starts with a highlight, the wonderful single trail over to Zeblasjach. Later you reach the Heidelberger Hütte, from where you have to push your bike up to the Fimberpass. Now it's time for the bumpy singletrail descent into Val Sinestra. After Zuort, a magnificent singletrail with impressive suspension bridges rides along the valley floor to Ramosch and on to Sur-En. Here or in nearby Scuol, we recommend setting up camp for the first night.

The second day is all about the Val d'Uina. A steep little road rides up the narrow valley until the famous rocky path begins high above. On this section, the bike has to be pushed, but there is more time for the sureal rock world in which you find yourself. After the rocky passage, you roll over the Schlinig Pass down to the Sesvenna hut and later along the cart track to Schlinig. Follow the Melzbach stream to Schleis, on to Laatsch and then into the final ascent into the Münstertal valley. The second stage ends in Müstair or Sta. Maria.

Day three starts with the ride up to the Umbrail Pass. The PostBus has the advantage of mastering the arduous 1100 meters in altitude. On the Umbrail Pass, you climb up to the Bocchetta di Forcola on a flowing single trail, later reaching the Bocchetta di Pedonolo, which is the starting point of the top descent to Lago di Cancano. A potholed high-level trail then rides to Arnoga. We extend the stage with the Val Viola pass and the descent to Poschiavo. The beautiful ascent through the Val Viola is easy to do, even if the path is very steep at the end. The descent is all the more fun. The trail has been specially developed for mountain bikers and rides past the uniquely beautiful lakes in Val di Camp. On the section after the Rifugio Saoseo, a good portion of riding technique is once again required, although the trail further down turns into a super-fun flow trail down to the Poschiavo valley floor.

The final stage leads via San Romerio to Tirano. After the first part of the ascent, the first wonderful singletrail leads you below Cansumé along the altitude, then there is another ascent to Sclupetoir and then the world-class trail over to San Romerio. The route then continues up and down on gravel roads to the green border with Italy, followed by another first-class trail via Roncaiola to Tirano. From here, you can return to Scuol on the Rhaetian Railway.

Note: The route is signposted entirely as a mountain bike route (32 - Trans Altarezia Bike), although the route suggested here deviates from this in a few sections to increase the singletrail section.

After the junction shortly after Passo Torri di Fraele, there is currently a grioss declared driving ban until Arnoga due to roadworks, which also applies to pedestrians and bikers. The only way around is via the main road with additional meters in altitude. At the weekend, however, you can easily pass this roadworks (bottleneck approx. 1.5m wide, approx. 50m long). During the week you have to decide for yourself on the spot.
On the descent from Saoseo, I would stay on the gravel road until Terzana. Trails before that really don't make much sense for touring bikers, unless you love carrying your bike over stones.
