Berglisee
Description
High above Mathon, on the north side of the Paznaun valley, lies the Berglisee - a scenically impressive mountain lake, which is not only known for its tranquillity, but also for its ice-cold water.
From Mathon, a gravel road rides uphill for around 550 meters until you switch to trail mode. The remaining 150 vertical meters to the lake are in typical walk-and-ride style: some sections are easy to pedal, others require pushing passages. Although you can get a little further with an e-bike, you will also have to rely on the pushing aid in places.
On arrival at the Berglisee lake, a particularly idyllic spot in the rear Paznaun awaits you - perfect for a rest or a refreshing (albeit cold!) swim.
The descent initially follows the ascent route, but branches off to the right shortly before the gravel road onto a steep forest floor trail. This trail winds its way downhill in tight bends and drops directly into the valley - steep and challenging, but rideable. At the bottom, you meet up with the ascent route again, which you follow smoothly back to Mathon.
An alternative descent route would ride via the Larainalm. However, the traverse there is practically unrideable, so you have to put up with long stretches of pushing. The subsequent trail up to the alpine pasture is good, but then a long gravel road dominates down into the valley - scenically beautiful, but rather monotonous in terms of riding technique.
Note: The route is located on Austrian territory and leads over routes that are not approved for mountain bikers. Riding this route on a mountain bike is the responsibility of each individual, in full awareness of the legal situation.
