Monte Breva / Piz La Stretta

Monte Breva / Piz la Stretta

Monte Breva separates the Bernina region in Switzerland from the Italian high valley of Livigno. The 3103-metre-high summit is the destination of a surprisingly unknown and technically challenging singletrail route around Piz Minor.

Description

Start at the valley station of the Diavolezza cable car between Pontresina and the Bernina Pass. The tour leads along a gravel road into the Val da Fain, after the alp on a good trail to the La Stretta crossing. Many people know this section from the tour towards Livigno. However, we now branch off to the left and shoulder the bike 640 meters up to the summit of Monte Breva (Piz La Stretta). The view from here of Piz Palü and Piz Bernina is first-class. And the descent is surprisingly fun. The first few meters are over the ridge, then the trail becomes more technical. The high alpine path is rideable up to a rocky step. A clean serpentine technique is required in the lower section. Back in La Stretta, take the trail over to the Forcola di Livigno. It is important to ride extremely carefully here, especially in the first part, as the trail leads through steep terrain. It is advisable to push the bike in the trickiest sections. From the Forcola di Livigno, you then climb up the well-maintained singletrail to Fuorcla Minor - the start of the brilliant singletrail key section through the Val Minor. This trail is also rocky and technically demanding, but impresses with the wonderful mountain idyll in this unspoilt high valley. The trail ends on the road to the Bernina Pass in the immediate vicinity of the starting point.

Tour made on 13.08.25. The tour is well described.
The trail from the summit to La Stretta is definitely fun.
From La Stretta I went directly east into the Val dal Fain and from there via the forest road back to the GPS track.
The trail is not without its challenges! But it's nice to ride towards the bottom.
The Val Minor is very beautiful. The trail is okay. There are better ones in this corner ;)

Tour made on 22.06. Beware of the continuous snowfield on the summit slope and considerable danger of falling towards the northeast. Therefore only up to pre-summit 3021 m. It will probably take another 3 weeks to reach the summit.

Very beautiful mountain. The descent from Breva is great fun. If you like hairpin bends. The Fuorcla Minor is very worthwhile. Mega landscape as well as the technical trail.

We rode the tour this week. The ascent to Monte Breva/Piz la Stretta is strenuous (mostly pushable) and the view is great. The descent from the summit to La Stretta was the best part of the tour: technically demanding (hairpin bends, gravel but few blocked sections) and mostly rideable. The traverse from La Stretta to the Forcola di Livigno is strenuous and a constant up and down. I didn't find it exposed. The ride through the Val Minor is very beautiful, but once again demands a lot when crossing the stone fields.

I rode the tour yesterday. The Val da Fain is very nice to ride up, even if it is an alpine road. From Alp la Stretta there is a fun single trail that can be ridden all the way to la Stretta. From there to Furcola di Livigno, most of it was unrideable for me. You also have to be sure-footed and shoulder the bike. In the lower part, the trail becomes rideable again (for me, because I'm not Hans no Way Rey :-) hahahaha). But the effort is still worth it, because from Furcola di Livigno there is a very nice technical uphill single trail, which I rode all the way :-) . The Val Minor is also very rideable, but you still have to carry or push your bike from time to time. This effort is also worthwhile here, as the lakes invite you to take a well-deserved break. The final section to Bernina Lagalp is very beautiful and fun to ride. From the final section on the Bernina Express route, you can chase e-bikes :-)

Checked 2020
It's bullshit that it's so dangerously exposed. You could ride 90% of the exposed passage and it would be dangerous. This passage is short. Push to this point about 5 minutes, the rest is no problem

An extremely great tour. I got snow from 2700m today. But it was the snow that made this tour so special. Snow biking in light snow is incredible fun. All in all, a tough but really rewarding tour.

P. S. Apart from the rocky section, I didn't shoulder the bike for a single meter, but pushed it.
