Col d'Anzana

The Col d'Anzana is undoubtedly one of the mountain bike tours that belong in every single trail lover's portfolio. The route starts in Poschiavo and has one of the longest descents in the Alps after Tirano.

Description

Ideally, you should start the tour to Col d'Anzana at Poschiavo station with the shuttle bus. This will take you via Brusio to Alp Pescia Bassa in Val dal Saent. It is also possible to master this route under your own steam, but it is only 1200 meters up to this alp - and many people don't have the strength for the challenging descent afterwards. From Pescia Bassa, you finally crank up to the upper alp, turn left and have to push your bike up to the Col d'Anzana (2222 meters above sea level). The view is phenomenal, the Valtellina lies deep below, the Bernina massif with the Piz Palü looms in the background, and the famous 1785-metre descent lies ahead of us. The trail initially winds along the mountain flank to the east, but then becomes increasingly steeper and winds downhill as a super trail to Alp Lughina. Always follow the hiking trail markings, although the path becomes considerably rougher in the lower section. Finally, you reach Tirano and take the Rhaetian Railway back to Poschiavo

Tips:

  • The last train with permitted bike transport leaves Tirano for Poschiavo at 17.40 p.m.
  • It is worth crossing over to the Swiss side at Lughina and taking the steep but much less rough trail via Scala down to Campocologno.

There is a much better option, right after the start on the pass, after about 100 meters, turn right into the mule track, follow the trail 301 to San Antonio, possibly lunch at the Baita del Sole, everything is easy to ride, organic or E!

Well, I wouldn't necessarily call the descent a super trail. After the promising, perfect start on the contour line heading east, a few actual super trails follow, but the rest down to Tirano is dull, boring, without any challenges for the biker, but for the brakes and suspension (even if they have 170 mm up their sleeve). After the approx. 1400 Elevation loss of the roughest washboard, you have to sort out your bones in the valley below...!

Hello Zäme

What do you mean by "limited suitability for e-bikes?

In reply to by LeutwilerReto

Because you have to push your bike on the ascent from Alpe Pescia to the pass. However, this section is also possible on an e-bike with the push aid.

I rode the tour yesterday with friends for the 2nd time. The tour is 100% suitable for e-bikes. The last section from Pescia Alta to Col d'Anzana can be ridden on an e-bike without any problems! After the beautiful traverse and the flowing descent in the forest, there's a creamy section with lots of hairpin bends (at the fork with the warning sign, you should push the bike - ride straight ahead). The descent with the e-bike is more comfortable than with a normal bike due to the extra kilos in the lower part of the "machine gun trail".

The first approx. 600 TM after the crossing follow an approx. 1-2 meter wide path, most of which is covered with large flat stone slabs. I would have classified this as bumpy S1 terrain. The hairpin bends in this section are without exception good and easy to ride.

In the lower half it gets rough: lots of rocks or larger stones and small steps again on a 1-2 meter wide steep path, perhaps S2. If you ride this part quickly, it's nice.

For the last 500 meters I took a steep, narrow hiking trail with challenging hairpin bends (S2 - S3).

Is your final variant at 1000 m above sea level to the left off the official path to Novaglia, then left again on the serpentine path to Castellilna or Rascia?

Pretty cool. I can only recommend it.

Simply a perfect tour. The ascent without the post bus is hard and long. The descent to Tirano is simply perfect!
