Bernina-San Romerio

San Romerio (Poschiavo)

The chapel of San Romerio is a classic destination for mountain bikers in Poschiavo. The route becomes really interesting if you start it on the Bernina Pass and then shuttle back to the hospice on the Rhaetian Railway.

Description

The San Romerio tour starts on the Bernina Pass just above the train station. A varied single trail leads downhill on the south side, crosses the road and climbs a few meters. From then on, top-class fun is the order of the day - all the way down to San Carlo. You pass La Rösa and follow the trails specially prepared for mountain bikers. In San Carlo, the long ascent to San Romerio awaits. Climb up a small road to Cruvera and shortly afterwards reach the signposted mountain bike route, which you follow to San Romerio. The excellent rifugio is the ideal place for a (late) lunch break. There are two options for the descent. The direct version to Caneu on Lago di Poschiavo is very demanding, but a worthwhile route for good riders. Less experienced riders can follow the alpine road for a while and turn right at the first opportunity. A mixture of trails and small roads takes you to Miralogo on Lago di Poschiavo. Here you take the train back to the Bernina Pass.

I rode the tour on 11.10.25. There are some closed sections down to San Carlo and once up to San Romerio. As the work was stopped over the weekend, I rode through without any problems. The steep final descent is completely open for me at the limit. I really enjoyed it. A dream fall day with a great route.

We rode the tour on 17.7.2021. Instead of from Bernina, we took this route from Poschciavo via the official San Romerio Swiss Mobil route. The direct trail from San Romerio is easily passable (as already reported) if you have overcome the steep passage at the beginning. After that, it's a very steep but fun and varied section - but not for everyone. If you have to return to Poschiavo, you can do so on the left side of the lake, the right side is forbidden for bikes.

Direct descent works again. The path has been cleared. In the first section, however, you still have to carry your bike down briefly. Great trail

Unfortunately, the direct final descent from San Romerio is closed due to storm wood. Due to a lack of time, I only got involved in the tree adventure briefly. Otherwise a nice, long tour. I like the other Bernina descents a little better overall.
