Hahnensee-Trail
Description
The starting point of the tour is St. Moritz Bad, from where you ride the first few meters on the main road towards Champfèr, but then soon turn left to the former ski jumping facility (ski jump area). A gravel road now leads up to the small Lej Nair and takes you to Surlej. If you are traveling early in the morning or late in the afternoon, it is best to take the Corvatsch gondola lift to Murtèl (bike transport only possible on the first and last connection of the day). Otherwise you have to rely on your own muscle power. Instead, you climb on a gravel road to Margun Surlej, where the ascent becomes mercilessly steep for a stretch. This gravel road leads up to Fuorcla Surlej, the culmination point of the Hahnensee tour. The panorama of the Bernina group from here is simply breathtaking. The descent then leads a few meters over single trails along the ascent route, with the Hahnensee trail soon branching off to the right. This is challenging but very fun to ride for good mountain bikers - but above all it offers a backdrop that is second to none. The view of the Upper Engadin lakes is nowhere better than here! The trail descends steeply in places to Lake Hahnensee (Rhaeto-Romanic: Lej dals Chöds), then becomes somewhat flatter before leading directly down to St. Moritz Bad at the fork in the trail at Gianda Naira.

Panorama very nice.
Mountain biking fun was only intermittent.
Can definitely agree with the previous speakers:
Super tour. Magnificent views, beautiful landscape. Technically demanding.
Exactly what we were looking for...
Super tour. Magnificent views, beautiful landscape. Technically demanding. The first part has been slightly shortened and therefore less demanding. The scree field remains the most challenging part.
Those who like it technical will get their money's worth. If you're looking for flow trails, you're in the wrong place.
The trail is phenomenal and demands much more in terms of riding technique than anything you can ride on Corviglia or Piz Nair. Those who don't shy away from the technical challenge will be more than rewarded. In my opinion, anyone looking for flow is out of place, even if there can be a certain "flow" in the technical passages.
Cool tour for those who want a challenge. Super view riding technique often 4 sections for sure a 5 with some running passages.
We rode the descent today after warming up the last few days (Piz Nair, Fuorcla Valletta, Bernina trails to Poschiavo). By train to Murtèl, then leisurely to Fuorcla Surlej. What a view. Then we set off on the descent. The start immediately gives a good impression of the rest of the route: repeatedly blocked, sometimes steep sections interspersed with steps, but also flowing sections in between. We descend a few times, but the climb back up is quite tough. This is followed by a more flowy section before it gets steeper before the Steinfeld with some high wooden steps. In the Steinfeld, we soon descend and only ride the lowest, less steep section, walking briefly in between. In total, however, the Steinfeld takes less than 10 minutes. The next few minutes up to the Hahnensee lake require us to remain fully concentrated. Nevertheless, we descend a few times for a few meters.
After the lake, there are a few tricky sections in steep, quite blocked terrain. After that, however, the trail becomes easier to ride, which makes for a nice finish to the descent.
All in all, a very rewarding descent. However, it is not suitable for beginners. We are certainly not super bikers, but we don't mind walking a few meters every now and then if the trail is fun. And we had a lot of fun.
The riding technique rating of 4 out of 6 is good overall, but almost nobody rides a few places.
Great tour! Can only agree with ride-r's comment. From the 2022 summer season, the cable car will transport bikes in the morning (8:25, 8:45, 9:05) and in the afternoon from 15:05.
Unfortunately, I can only confirm that the trail is very limited fun. This is not so much because I had to get off the bike too often, but because there is simply no flow on this trail. In addition, there's a driving ban right in the middle. Admittedly, most people will dismount here anyway, but it somehow fits in with the rest of the tour. The two others I met shortly before the lake were clearly even less enthusiastic than I was. Better to ride down the trail on the other side and roll out legally on the road.
Where exactly are there now driving restrictions? The last time we rode this tour was in 2020, and there weren't any driving restrictions anywhere back then.
We rode this tour on 29.07.2020. We had saved this tour as a dessert after a "day tour with already 2000hm". The train transport worked excellently with the already sensationally friendly train staff. From the middle station, a wide path rides up to Fuorcla. From there it became quite steep and technical, but just about rideable for me. The short uphill section was also just about rideable at the limit, as it was very rough. From 2486 it went downhill again and became very technical, many passages were simply not rideable for my abilities. My buddy wasn't very amused by the route either. At Hahnensee we decided to take the "emergency exit" and broke off the exercise in the direction of St. Moritz. So I can't confirm ride-r's report. At least I didn't have to descend 3-4 times at the scree field like he did, but only once, as I couldn't get back on after the first descent . This tour doesn't meet my abilities and "standards" at all and I probably won't ride it again in this life.
I ride a Scott Genius Ultimate and am usually in the head group uphill; downhill I'm always last, by a long way.
Beautiful ascent to the Fuorcla Surlej and unbelievably great views. The descent is extremely rocky (especially the large stone field) and I would therefore suggest a 5/6 classification in terms of riding technique. Only the first and last 200 vertical meters were fun to ride. In my opinion, there are more beautiful descents in the Upper Engadine.
Which descents do you like best?
Super tour! On the one hand because of the panorama from the Fuorcla Surlej of the glaciated mountains and the lakes of the Engadin on the way. On the other hand, the trail is a good contrast to the omnipresent "Allegraization". The trail shows its "teeth" from top to bottom, but is still almost completely rideable. Only the section through the large scree field will force most bikers to dismount 3-4 times.
By the way: apparently bikers can now use the second-last and last lanes of the day.
