Bellavista Zernez
Description
From Zernez, you initially ride upstream along the Inn on a gravel road. After passing a quarry, you turn left onto a narrower, steeper forest road that climbs 200 meters in elevation. The route then transitions into a trail that you can ride up for most of the way. With an electric mountain bike, you can manage it almost the entire way. At 2,075 meters above sea level, you reach the border of the national park. So you’ll need to push your mountain bike uphill for a short stretch and follow the traverse trail a bit further north. At 2,100 meters above sea level, you reach the national park border again.
The descent trail now forms the boundary of the national park; it is not located within the park and can therefore be ridden on. The root-strewn trail is a pleasure to ride, while beautiful views of the national park open up repeatedly on the right-hand side. You’ll pass the Bellavista Hut and head back toward the valley floor near Zernez on first-class, sometimes somewhat steep S2 trails through a stunning forest.
Important: You should only attempt this tour outside of peak travel season and not on weekends—and even then, only with great caution. Hikers on this route are generally not particularly pleased by the presence of mountain bikers, even though the route, apart from a very short section, does not lie within the National Park.
